a/c ???? only blowing through window vents

does the heater core need to be hooked up for the a/c to blow through the front vents? currently have a bypass hose on the hard water line.

Nope, sure doesn't. Sounds like a vacuum leak. If you just looped off the heater core & noticed this issue, more than likely the vacuum line that runs inside to control the selector position was accidentaly broken or disconnected. Start there first & if you don't find anything, look under the dash at the multi-colored vacuum lines to make sure they are all connected.

+1 on vacuum lines. the ones behind the glove box like to come loose a lot
