Is your Mustang equipped with the V8 or the V6?

Check the vacuum hoses running along the firewall to the vacuum tree which should be on the driver side of the engine bay near the firewall. Sounds like you may have a leak.

+1 Vaccum lines, switch or the vacuum actuators that control where the air goes. Double check em' all.

Wow that sounds really familiar. I just had the same problem with mine except mine would come out of the defrost all the time when I tried to use the air. There was a big vacuum leak from one of the hoses but I got it repaired and it has been perfect ever since. I'm not sure how you would find out where the leak is by yourself but I took it to a friend who owns a mechanic shop and it didn't cost that much to fix. Good luck.

It's usually a very easy fix. All you really have to do is trace hoses. I had a leak on my 96 Stang and it only cost me $5 to fix.
