Let me just say that I am "old school"... I'd go in increments starting with gears. I scanned the forums and chose 3.90's over my stock 3.27. It really depends on the type of performance you're looking for. If you want top speed for long hauls, or if you want to out accelerate a Honda Accord from one light to the next. I chose the latter because a school bus can get up to 120 mph ...given enough distance...but I wanted to leave cars in my dust. If anyone can buy gears and get them professionally installed for $500...God Bless ya, you've found someone who works for $10./hr.
For other mods, my basic rule of thumb is....$85 spent = 1 HP gain. It costs thousands of dollars to go from a 14 sec to a 12 sec street car. OK...let the flaming begin

Labor rates vary from state to state. Around here, $300 to install gears is normal.
The only real thing to contemplate when deciding on gears is future mods. You will regret having a set of 4.10's and a 600 hp Kenne Bell.
If I had that much cash to drop, I would save another grand or so and get some FI.

You're right about the labor. Here In Harrisburg, 4 performance shops quoted about $850 for the pretty much 6 hr +/- job of buying/installing gears...not including anything additional like axle/pinion seals, speedo recal or possibly a $100 ABS sensor etc.
The burning question...why do "you" mod-up muscle cars if not to maximize it's potential....to dominate Hondas or otherwise ?
Typically I'd say you need to set your bar higher, but after a Honda "dominated" the mustang a few weeks ago (RIP babygirl) I say go get 'em!
In general though I'm far happier stomping all over the yuppie punks in their LX chassied POS...
