And if you can, find a set off a 70's motor, they had taller covers than the later 80's EFI versions

I found the 10.00 Rocker clips to work just fine.
Keeps the oil from spurting.
If you can idle it down to below 800 rpm the oil will stay flowing back
to the pan.

there you go. You just clip these on the end of the rocker with the plastic shoving in the top of the pushrod

If you decide to get a set then get some rubber badns and wrap it around them the best you can to get them to stay on.Some times they fly off.

You say there's a mild cam in it. Which rockers are you using? Perhaps if you don't have the long slot arms the rockers are hitting the studs. I had this problem once and it drove me nuts.

Just a thought.

as they said check easy stuff

One thing I would verify is that all the plug wires are truly on in the right order. May sound too simple, but I've seen it happen before, even by experienced mechanics, who spent a lot of time chasing down a miss by overlooking something simple.

D.Hearne said:
To do it running, you really need to take an old steel valve cover, then cut the top off, and bolt it in place before trying to adjust them while running. Then start the motor, and doing them one by one, tighten them down till it misses, then back off til you hear the rocker clatter, then tighten 3/4 turn.

D, I usually just lay a shop rag over the rockers, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to adjust the valves. Shouldn't make to much of a mess

Ron,

If you are still having problems in a few weeks, let me know. I will let our club know and we might be able to make a trip to Opelika on a staruday and make it a club event.

I was in opelika the other day, but didnt have your number. it was a spur of the moment trip.

This may be too simple but did you try checking your belts for wear and tension? They could be throwing everything off.

Did you change the fuel lines (under the car) after the long sit?

ok...

Sorry I have not had a chance to do anything. My wife had a baby on Friday and then the baby we re-admitted to the Hospital On Tuesday. She has/had Jaundice pretty bad...hopefully she will be home in a day or so.

I was asking the procedure for adjusting the valves while running. I did not see it in the prior threads...Now re-reading this thread for like the 100th time I see D.Hearne's post...

I did not change the steel lines..I did put a new in line fuel filter, and and new rubber lines.

Shane...thanks for the offer, but this weekend will not be a good idea read above...maybe next weekend if I don't have it going by then.

Thank all of you..

I think my issue is with the valves...I THOUGHT I read that you tighten until you cannot turn by fingers and then 3/4 turn more...and that is not the case...therefore I have likely over tightened all the valves.

have you adjusted that thing yet? if ya overtighten youll bend a rod and bind a spring. Off of what D.Hearne was saying..(my addition) You can do it with the car off as to tightening until the pushrod cant move so its a lil more than snug. Then, you start the car and tighting until it stops clacking to be at zero. If its not clacking back off of it until it clacks and then tighten until it stops and then do 1/2 turn at first. 3/4 turn would be the most i'd go but I would go 1/2 and take note of how its reacting and then go 3/4 to see the difference. After the car has heated up to operating temp, you might wanna re-check the lash again. Thats how I would do it..
