So the AC hasn't blown cold on my 2000 V6 in a while and I just decided to get around to taking a look at it. When I turn on the AC the compressor only kicks on for a couple seconds at a time, then shuts off. Is there a way to tell if this is a clutch problem, a bad compressor, or a lack of freon?

Honestly, i would take it to a auto shop and have them look it over. Unless your very technical in auto mechanics...lack of freon is caused by a leak in the line somewhere. You should never really lose freon at all if you system does not leak. Did the AC stop blowing cold gradually or was it sudden?

I had this problem in my 1998 model. It was something as simple as a cracked hose, and it wasn't an expensive fix.

Freon is R12 and hasn't been used in a Mustang since 1993.

The cycling of your compressor is very likely a low-charge condition.

+1 on low refrigerant. There's a low-pressure switch that will inhibit the compressor to keep you from burning it up if you're low on refrigerant.

Try topping it off with one of the cans you can get in the auto parts stores. Some include a UV leak tracer to help you find the leak. Treat it as diagnostic only- not a permanent fix. The leak will still have to be found and repaired before you can use the system again for good.
