AC Pulley wont spin!!

So the car was running fine until I parked it and heard a clicking sound, I opened the hood and noticed that the belt was spinning aronud all the pulleys fine until it got to the AC...it would spin around it and the entire piece would spin, then stop and the belt would continue to spin around it, and it kept doing this on and off..

Whats my prob, and how do I fix it?

The compressor is siezed. Turn off the air conditioner for starters (that means no defrost either), then have the compressor rebuilt or replaced.

Sounds like you locked up the A/C compressor.

remove the electrical connection from the compressor clutch assy until you are able to get it repaired.

So would removing the electrical connector make the a/c pulley free spinning? My pulley seems a bit hard to pull around even with the a/c off (of course the belt is off). It won't freely spin by hand and keep going. It will make a few rotations and stop. Make sense?

I think I'm being robbed of power even with the a/c off

yeah same situation, it makes a few rotations and then stops, the AC is off and it still does this, do i just have to unplug the electrical connection on it for now

what price am I looking at for a replacment or rebuild?

Removing the electrical connector will keep the A/C clutch from engaging regardless of how you have the HVAC panel setup inside. Go to a junk yard and fond a compressor that you can spin by hand (ensure that you are spinning the compressor and not clutch assy). Install it and have it properly serviced. If you convert at the same time then the whole job can be accomplished for less than $200. I have all stock parts on my converted HVAC system. All I did was change the fittings, have it sucked down, filled, purged, then reserviced. It's not as cold as it was with R-12 but still works great.

Does it make any grinding sounds when the pulley is rotating without the compressor engaged? It sounds like the compressor is shot, but it also sounds like mine did when it seized. I ordered a new one, and swapped them out.

what if i want to get rid of the AC competley, after all, it is a convertible..?

Personally, I like having the AC for the defrost, but there are AC delete kits available. I haven't done it, so someone else will have to get ya a link to one, but deleting it is definitely an option.

The defroster will still work without the A/C unit but you have to wait for the motor to warm up before it will get rid of condensation on the inside. IMO, the biggest reason the defroster works through the A/C unit is so that the A/C is operated through the winter months to keep the seals, pump, etc. in good working condition.
