i had my gt40 iron heads taken apart and cleaned for my new engine. do i need a helicoil for one of the bolts because the bolts that were in there before are too small. i asked my machine shop but he didn't remember if he took out a helicoil. its just one of the three bolts for my alternator and power steering bracket. the other two on each side still fit

Sorry I didn't see this two days ago when you asked it. Anyway, from what I understand, there are threaded inserts that you put into there to hold accessory brackets on. I don't think a normal heli-coil would work because you have to use a specific size tap to create threads for the heli-coil and I doubt the threads you currently have in your head would match up to the ones needed for the heli-coil to thread in. Does that make sense?
You supposedly can buy the threaded inserts you need at the ford dealer. I don't know the price, though.

So if I follow you correctly the hole that you have the arrow pointing to is too large for the bolt to thread into. The other two bolt holes are fine. There is a bushing that is threaded on the outside and the inside that you should be able to get from your local Ford dealer. It will thread into the hole you have the arrow pointing at and the alternator bolt will thread into the inside threads of the bushing.
The large holes are for the thermactor system. They are on both ends of the heads so that the heads can be interchanged and are not side specific. When they are at the back of the head the crossover tube attaches and covers the holes up. At the front of the heads the threaded bushing is inserted and they are used as accessory mounting points.

The heads are not side specific so they have to have the same mounting and thermactor ports in each end of the head. It is a cost saving thing since all of the heads are cast the same and then can be bolted on either side during factory assembly

The end that faced the firewall when it was on the drivers side would now face the front of the engine. And the end that faced the front on the drivers side would now face the firewall. So they put the same accessory mounting holes in each end of the head along with the thermactor port in each end. Then they just add the threaded bushings like mattmcdan linked to on the front of the heads to mount the accessories. The ford ones are the same as the bushings that mattmcdan linked only difference is that you should be able to get them locally.
So basically each head is the same and not really side specific until you put the threaded bushing in.
