Take a few minutes to completely inspect the routing of the cable. Pay close attention to where the cable passes through the floor, where it physically connects to the quadrant, and where it attaches to the clutch fork. These are all possible sources of the binding that you're experiencing.
There are two other possibilities, but they're a bit intrusive. The retaining spring clip on the clutch fork could be damaged somehow (anything from a bent clip to corrosion on the surface of the pivot ball). Depending on how many miles are on the clutch cable (I'm assuming you reinstalled the original cable after breaking the new one), it could have a groove cut in the inner sleeve. The cable could then be binding inside the groove.
But based on the creaking noise, I'd suspect it's a metal on metal issue. Get a buddy to repeatedly engage/disengage the clutch while you locate the source of the sound. This will narrow it down quite a bit.
And yes, the KC clutch sucks.
