Hey I just got done with my T-5 swap. At first the trans was hard to put in any gear, I installed an adjustable cable and it is better now. I still have a situation where it seems like I need extra effort to shift 1st or 2nd , and 2nd grinds on quick shifts. I dont know where to check my air gap on my clutch or how far I should tighten down the nut on the adjustable cable. Any suggestions?

Where is the point of engagement? Is the pedal near the floor or around the middle of its travel?

You want a slight preload on the cable, but if the clutch adjustment is off, it should affect all gears nearly the same.

Good luck.

The engagement is about mid way, I loosend the cable a bit but not a lot of luck.

If adjusting the cable to ensure full disengagement, one would tighten the cable (remove slack) rather than loosen the cable.

If your point of engagement was halfway up, it sounds like it was tight to start with. You could make it fairly tight to be super sure it is not an adjustment issue (I would do this, start it up and try it once, and then introduce slack - dont leave it like that or it can burn up the new clutch).

Otherwise, it might be a soft part issue inside the trans. You could try a different trans fluid (ATF) - synthetics can kinda help out a bit.

Good luck and bump for ya.

Yeah I just got this trans for the swap last week and was kinda afraid of this happening. It has new atf in it and a TRI-AX shifter with the plastic cup installed in the trans for the shifter "ball" to sit in.

Do you have an firewall adjuster?

I use this and it helps.

Plus the double hook quadrant.

I would run a regular FORD OEM non adjustable cable, and work from the firewall adjuster.

I agree, that is why I went with the non adjustable. CJponyparts sell the OEM cable and the fork for cheaper than a cable alone.
