A buddy of mine has a barely used ADS superchip for my 91 mustang GT, 5spd.. he is willing to give me for free.. my only mods are a offroad X-pipe and flowmaster american thunder catback..

anybody used one of these chips before? are they good? bad? is it going to give me a performance increase?

any input is appreciated.

i had one on my car when i bought it...car was basically stock. after i put the cobra intake and 1.7 rockers on it....the car ran like crap. i couldnt get the timing right and i always had detonation no matter what i did. took it off and it runs great now. its good for a stock engine but anything other than that youre better off just advancing the timing and increases fuel pressure yourself

If your ADS chip is a piggy-back chip then i had one like it in my stock 90lx AOD. The only mod i had was flows. The ADS Superchip i had came w/ a 160 stat and an Octane bar. The bar replaced the OEM bar in the dist. The chip DID make a difference(maybe 20hp) But as soon as i made my first mode ie; intake , tb ,shorties the chip ended up being usless.

Back in the day, a couple magazines ran dyno tests on the different chips on the market. What they show is an off-the-shelf chip for a basically stock car is about as effective as just bumping the timing. They end up nearly the same.

In fact, I remember a test with the ADS chip with the octane bar, and after the initial test, they took the chip out and left the bar in and saw no change.

I would basically think of off-the-shelf chips for these cars as useless.

Junk. It wont hurt to try it I suppose. If its free it doesn't matter. The only really noticable thing will be your car running hot. You'll see. Keep us posted. In theory those chip are good but they are designed for use in a stock car. Its the same thing as having somebody flash you a custom chip without the custom part. The chips have generic changes in timing, spark, and fuel curves.

In a stock AODE car I could see where it would help some. Custom programming is the way to go. In a newer OBD car its a must but were talkind EECIV computers here. Also those chips are usless if you have any mods.

I had a Superchip in my 97 F150 (4.6/auto/Gibson exhaust) ran very good w/ the chip.

I have one in my stock motored flowmasterd 91 LX, I've noticed better throttle response. You'll notice alot more with an auto tranny than a stick.

ill get over to my buddys sometime next week and get the chip off him and keep you posted on the results.

thc420 make sure you get the OCTANE BAR from your friend also. if you dont the chip will pretty much give you crap. I ran it with and without the bar to see the diff.
