i was going to advance my timing yesturday...but when i would advance it, it would idle high...sounded like it was running at like 1500RPM..but when i would back it down to where i had it, it would idle normal again?? what gives

also...when using my timing light the pointer was pointing to the left of the "0"...isnt that ATDC..i thought it was suppose to be BTDC...anyway..it also looked as though it was only at around 8-10 for timing?? if pointer is right..which i dont think it is

i think the pointer is off...the pointer is adjustable..what can i do to make sure its at TDC so i can readjust the pointer??

When I adjust my timing, if I advance, usually my car will increase idle for a little while, then just adjust back to around where it was. If you are questioning anything, you follow the instructions previously mentioned and re-stab the distributor.

I always start the car then pull the spout, it will not hurt a thing. Usually depending on how far you advance it you may have to re-set the idle. Just be sure to unplug the IAB when setting the idle.

It is always best to set up the pointer when you are building the motor to ensure it is right on "0", put you can use the spark plug method and something in the hole to make sure it is all the way up, but it still won't be exact.

You can pull the valve cover or instake and hook up a dial idicator on the lifter or pushrod to ensure it is right at TDC, then re-mark it. They also make piston stops that go into the spark plug hole.

How did the clutch work out, I never went back in that thread...

i did have the pointer exact from when i built the motor..but recently had to replace a leaky timing cover gasket..and when i removed pointer it must of got out of adjustment

im also a bit confused with the idle adjustment plate i have..it has two screws to adjust...i just messed with one of them when i put it on last summer and got it where i wanted it...but am i suppose to mess with both of them??

clutch worked out ok...alot better then it was last summer/fall...still engages a bit high but i think thats just how this clutch is....i can now put it,in first gear when stoped with out reving, the TKO tranny i have sure seems notchy though...hope thats normal..cause i dont wanna replace that, thing is pretty much new....one thing i noticed right away was after readjusting the clutch i now have that inch or so of "spong" on the pedal

If you do the feel for air method you might wanna have your assistant go aorund a few times cuz youll feel a little air on the exhaust stroke and a lot of air on the compression stroke. Some people cant tell the difference.
