I got into my car and it wouldn't come out of park. The button wouldn't go in. So I turned the key a little (before the lights would come on) and I can put it in neutral to start it.

I found a brown wire right by the under the dash on the drivers side that wasn't connected. It is part of my braking system I figured out because the brake lights don't come on, and when I have the cruise control on if you hit the brakes it doesn't stop the cruise control. (you have to turn the cruise off) Just figured this out yesterday.

Would it be okay to solder the wire, or should replace it? Think I would have to buy a whole new assembly.

Your advice is very much appreciated.

Regards,

Alexander

Ok, I give up. What model year? I'm assuming an automatic.

Looked over the wiring diagrams for the 99-04 MY, I don't see a brown wire associated with the brake lights or cruise control.

That really means a lot for you doing that.

It's a 2001 GT Automatic.

I had a Car Alarm put in with the remote start and it had so many wires I almost didn't want have installed. But I don't think it could be that.

It's weird though. The first time I did it somehow I didn't have the key all of the way forward and turned on the A/C thinking I was out of freon when I realized the key wasn't turned all the way forward. Which makes me think that it could be that auto start now. There had to be at least 35 wires on that alarm.

Really appreciate you looking in the book for me Sir. Believe and was taught that when people who do 'random acts of kindness' like that get great things back for being like that.

Thank you Sir

Who did the install? If a shop did take it back and have to fix their problem.

If you did it, I would suggest getting a Haynes/Chiltons or other repair manual and start tracing wires.

With autos it's required to press on the brake to release the shifter, I forget how it's done, been too long....

At least on my moms 2000 V6, it is required that you be pressing the brake pedal to release the shifter to remove the car from park. Obviously, there is a brake pedal switch somewhere on the pedal assembly, probably up high. You could probably check that with a DMM. There will also be a switch somewhere inside the shift assembly that releases the lock on the shifter. It is possible that has gone bad too.
Or, more likely, monkeys at the shop you had the alarm installed screwed up the wiring somehow.
