still trying to give the car a tune up. changed the coil, coil wire, plug wires and cap and rotor. car still has difficulty starting up once in a while, so im thinking its my plugs. i took out the #5 plug briefly to lok at it, and it was coated a powdery white. also, while doing some exhaust work today, i saw my fuel filter was incredibly rusty, although it looked like very new lines and tubes. what affect can bad plugs and fuel filter cause?

White plugs are kinda??? That would make me say it's lean, Tan is more the color you should be seeing....filter could help out there to since it sound ancient....alot times its not tho...but its cheap and worth changing if old to me...
Have you cleaned the MAF, check the timing when its warm, pulled any codes?
Hard starting can sometimes be an old fuelpump...causing excessive cranking before it lights off...
Pulling the codes may help to...you could have a sensor or the stator in the dizzy going South...they may have left codes behind??

Just some thoughts...

when u say hard start, what do you mean? maybe 1 out of 7 starts ( when car is warm) as soon as i turn the ignition and starts cranking, i will hear a loud boom/thud. very deep, not too loud, but enough for my mom to notice when in the car. what may that indicate?

Hard starting as in lotsa cranking time before it lights off....if your getting "boom" as in backfiring, then I would be looking at ignition myself...Is it a pig on gas???
Do you know where the timing is set???

Did the noises your hearing come about after you did your plugs/wires???

White = lean or pinging. Is the motor pinging at WOT????

Just swap plugs and fuel filter and be done with it.

not trying to steal the thread but my plugs were white. I changed them and my car stills run like crap, including bad mpg. Its not pinging, but is there anything else I should do?
