AFR 165 head questions

Hello all, I have a 94 cobra 5-speed with a recently installed crane 2031 cam, and am ready to do heads. I'm looking to get AFR 165cc heads.. my question is, they offer the heads in stud mount and pedestal mount rocker setups, i was hopeing to save some $$$ and use my stock Crane 1.7rr (pedestal mount) but have heard i should go with stud mount heads? (not sure why.. mechanic buddies told me to steer away from pedestal mount?? my future plans for the car is a 100 wet shot zex kit (going on same time as heads) and a kenne bell 2.2 blower next winter if that makes any difference

if im not mistaken there is only 1cc difference between ped mount and stud mount heads. any other reason (besides better rocker selection in stud mounts? thanks! G.

Go stud mounted with some trickflow 1.7's . You'll be much happier knowing that the studs are stroner and are easier to install rocker arms.

Go stud mount, it will offer better adjustability and strength; especially if you want to go larger cam in the future.

I had the exact same issue on my 94 cobra when i installed my 165 heads. I kept my original Cobra 1.7rr. Installation is kind of a pain if you're not used to shimming them. I've never heard any horror stories of these breaking because of a big cam. My cam had a .580 lift. I'm going to a turbo set-up and Turbo Time said i would have no problem with the peds. One thing I would reccomend is getting a pushrod length checker before you get the pushrods.

I run studs on mine and prefer them over peds.

They are a bit stronger, more stable, easier to adjust, and offer more flexability with adjustment without the need of shims or longer pr's.

Are they a must have ............... no

They do add to the cost with their need for different or new pr's, guide plates, etc. IMHO, they are worth the added cost.

Lots of peeps have the ped mounts and have no trouble what so ever with them.

I have pedestals and I SO wish I would have bought stud mount. I HIGHLY recommend going stud mount and selling your rockers, its much easier to get the valvetrain geometry right, amongst other things.

I agree with the other peeps. I have stud mounts and they were easy as pie to install. Also consider upgrading spring and valves. Just One Man's Opinion.

JFYI- my heads did NOT have the upgraded springs and I had NO issues making dyno pulls to 6300 and shifting the car at 6000rpms for 4 years.

I had peds on my other heads and the bolts were pretty wimpy. I have stud mounts on my AFR's now and just in hardware comparison between the two is not even close. Strength and adjustability is much better on studs.

i say go stud mount and sell your 1.7's to offset the cost difference
