I plan on buying a set of AFR 165's to put on my stock block, I want to get everything I will need so I can change them over a weekend without having to wait and order more parts so everything fits. My engine is from a 96 Explorer, it had new bearings installed and a stock Mustang cam in it, the crank was polished but didn't need to be ground, the cylds. were ok so no machine work was done on it, just honed it lightly. TTCI Saturday Night Special Torque Convertor. Other mods are shorty BBK headers, 65mm TB, 3.73 gears, and a 70mm Mass Air, and 255lph fuel pump.

1. Will 1.7 roller rockers work with a stock cam or should I just stick with 1.6's?

2 What length push-rods are needed with everything else being stock, the block has not been touched and stock Mustang cam ( for now)?

3. Which intake would be better, I have a Mustang intake bored out to 65mm and an Explorer intake. When I installed a set of GT40 ( 3 bar) heads and the Explorer intake I lost some low end power but gained at higher RPM's, I assume that was because the heads were a larger cc than the stock E7 heads and dropping down to the 58cc AFR heads will give me back more low end and still flow better for more higher RPM power, so I plan on using the Explorer intake again.

I want to get the heads and enjoy them this year and will probably tear it down over the winter for a cam change, I just don't have the time right now to tear the engine down since I'm working 60+ hours a week.

1) 1.7 will work, been done many times.

2) hard to say, really need to measure for them.

3) explorer is the one I would go with.

It's only an inch or two. What's the big deal?

I was having a cold beverage with @hoopty5.0 today and he told me for a couple hundred bucks tmoss can port that explorer intake and make it out flow the holley systemax. To me that's money well spent if you are going with afr heads? Pffft. Port that intake and make the power those heads can produce..

If you want driveability and a stockish idle, go with the stock cam and 1.7 rockers. If you go with an aftermarket cam, then I would go 1.6. For pushrods, you will need to measure. The length will be -nywhere from 7.3 to 7.5 inches long. For the intake, if the choices are stock or explorer, then explorer hands down.

As a reference, I run Afr 165's, Ford 1.6 rockers, TFS1 cam, ported explorer intake and the usual other bolt ons. Through an AOD I dynoed at 292rwhp and 317rwtq.
