ok im a college kid on a budget....my machinest told me he can fully port my e7s, put bigger valves in and some springs for 450.....does anyone know if they are really worth porting or would i be better off saving up for the afr 185s......i will be running these on a carbed 331....
another thing, what kind of times should i be running with fully ported e7s/afrs, full manual valve bodied AOD, holley 750 carb, victor jr intake port matched to heads, .500 lift cam and 4.30 gears on bfg drag radials? The car only weights 3025lbs and keep in mind that it is a 331

I have a set of AFR 185's for a DSS bullit 308. Save your money up for the 185's.

E7's = way cheaper, but E7 = stock
bigger valves are still real small
ported until failure is still not as good as an aftermarket casting.

For the money, get a junkyard cobra motor or 96 explorer motor for $300-500 and take the heads off that... the GT40's are still better than ported stock. If you want a serious setup, save up for a power adder or get some good heads.

you cannot compare the 2 heads.
unless you mechanic can give you flow numbers, or show you previous customers success with the E7's, I wouldn't let him touch a set.

for a 331, I think it'd be a shame to put on E7's of any varation compared to afr 185's.

a 3000lb car w/ proper 331, afr185's, built auto, 4.30's and bfg dr's should be well into the 11's, even with a small cam.

i have everything but the heads figured out....other than that the car is ready to go!......so you think it would be worth it to wait a couple months, save up, and buy the afrs?

I went the ported e7 route and wish I would have just bought some Eddy or TW heads. I did notice a difference with the ported heads, but my friend has a 93 GT with fewer mods than me but with AFRs. I took a ride in his car and . Not only will they outflow ported E7s but they weigh a lot less.

but afrs are more than twice the cost of porting the E7's -
I've got one of the best machinest around here and he's my dads friend - i think he could do a great port job on my E7's

What does port until failure mean?

Afr's hands down. You may be able to find a used set of heads as well. I'd strongly consider swapping the afr valve springs out as well!! I can understand using your E7's due to money reasons, but for a 331 why put money into them?

If that is all you have and you want to get your car running, get the ported stockers, you can always sell them later.

The fact is that the ported stockers will perform really good if the porting is done properly but not near as well as AFR185's.

I ran Thumper E7's, ported with lots of work on the bowl sides, 5 angle on stock valves, upgraded double springs. They performed very well, I was trapping 85mph in the 1/8th mile with a 8.4 ET and this is with a worn out motor with only boltons. I sold them and now have a set of TFS's and I am building a new motor.

well i have had the gt for over two years and have thrown money at it when i can....i put 11gs down on the gt and just got it payed off 2months ago, im currently done modding the 03 until modular parts get cheaper and i get out of college....so thats when i decided to buy a fox and start modding it.....already have the fox with new paint, built aod and the 331 is sitting topless in the car right now awaiting heads....i still owe 700$ on the 331 (i love having good credit) i saved myself alot of money knowing how to install everything myself.......sometimes college just seems like it is holding me back from making money oh well only two and 1/2 years left

Werd... I have a hard enough time paying for gas, insurance and repairs at the moment.

My vote would be the AFR's, might as well build it right. With a 331 you can really take advantage of the better heads.

If you want to improve performance, and stay around the $400 range, look for a set of GT40 heads (not GT40P, you'll end up buying new headers for those). They're on 93 Cobra's and Lightnings (351W).

I'd place the GT40s somewhere between ported E7s and the AFRs (probably closer to the E7s than they are to the ARFs though...).

If you're near WI, I have a set of GT40s lying around.
