I just rebuilt a 91 302, installed a crane 2020, and topped it off with a pair of Windsor Jr heads, Offenhouser dual plane and a new 600 holley. I am disapointed to say the least. I think the 180 cc intake runners are killing the bottom end, and the cam is too small to develop power on top end. I want to swap the heads for either AFR 165 or Trick Flow TW. I am pretty sure what response I will get on this board, but want to know anyway.
Thanks.

You need specific TW pistons if you will change out cams and exceed a certain lift and duration. Check with Trick Flow on the limits. If you will stay with a cam of around 0.500" lift, then non-CNC'd TW heads are a very good choice. They flow very well to that lift and then level off. AFRs will probably make more power if you use a higher lift cam (maybe 0.550 and up). CNC'd TWs are a different story. They make big-time power with more cam.

Is that Offy the one with the dual runner system? If so, I'd dump it and get a Stealth or Performer RPM Air-Gap.

I agree with SoCal. Both the AFR and the Twisted Wedge heads are great choices. Can't go wrong with either head. The Windsor Jr's should make decent power with a correctly matched cam.

What are the specs of the Crane 2020? Isn't that a fairly small cam for a performance application?

What gears are you running?

Auto or stick? If auto, what stall converter?

It takes an entire combo to be fast. You could have a great performing engine but without the right gears and stall it would feel gutless down in the low rpm's.

Both these guys are right on the money. Both heads are great. I have the TFS TW on mine & have been very happy with them. Went from GT40 Iron Heads to the TFS TW heads and picked up a lot more torque with them. Happy shopping!

Mustbereel, I did edit my reply. I showed my wife what I did and the return comments and she cracked up. Too funny!

Each are good, each has there down fall.
AFR's like to strip at the header threads. Easy to fix if addresed before hand. TW like to crack between the seat on the valves.

My leaning is basically this for a street motor: if you can find a conventional, 20* inline head that meets your performance needs, use that head. Other designs often have some issues. These issues may not be material on a racing engine, however. In that regard, I would not hesitate to bolt up a set of Cleveland-style CHI heads on a Windsor-style racing engine. So, IMO, take your pick based on how the engine will be used.
