Aftermarket antenna install - 2 male ends?

Hello,

I have a 1988 Mustang LX hatchback (California version).

I just bought the UPR shorty antenna, part number 1750-02. It seems to have a male screw, but when I looked at my stock antenna base, it also has a male screw. Obviously, I can't screw a male screw onto a male screw, so I'm wondering if I should have bought a different antenna. Or am I supposed to remove part of the base?

One can find the UPR antenna at the following website, by doing a search for the keyword "1750" or "antenna". It says it's for "all year Fords". They do have a different antenna, which is part number 1752-01, which seems like it may have a female end. Is that what I need? I hope not, because I much prefer the one that I bought, because it's not so fat.

I wonder if I can find an adapter, so that I can use the aftermarket antenna.

I don't think so. At least, not without using 2 pairs of pliers, which might damage it.

Maybe I'll try that later, if no one else has any suggestions.

The stock antenna (I guess it's stock, but maybe not) is already short, about 14 inches long. The problem is, it's bent really badly, and it's fat, black, plastic coated, and I'd much rather have a thin, metallic one.

I think someone changed the mount on your fender the one one mine is a female end I think. Your atenna will work on my car. Try a wrecking yard and get a stock fender mount.

Maybe I'll dremel off the male end from the antenna, then drill a hole in the end of the antenna, and then tap the end of the antenna, to make it female. That seems like a lot of work, but maybe less work than finding and installing a stock base.

I'm more comfortable modifying the antenna. If I screw up the antenna, then it's no big deal. But if I screw up the base, then it would be a pain to fix.

My Dad has one of those trucker girl atenna's in the garage and it came with a bunch of adapters I will look and see if there is one that will work for you and send it to you. I got a speedo gear from bill302 and it was a wopping 63 cents to ship to me so I will send it to ya for free in a small padded envelope

the male end that is stuck in your mount is supposed to come out.

use some penetrating lube on it, and then grab it with some vice grips.

Cool, thanks for your help. It may be difficult to find an adapter, though, because it looks like the antenna end is narrower than the base end.

That gives me an idea, though. Maybe I'll go to Pep Boys and see if they have any antenna kits with adapters, or just the adapters sold separately.

Hmmm. Okay, maybe I'll try using a pair of pliers to twist out the male end, which is in the base. I'll try to put some rubber around the male end, so that I don't mess up the threads. Thanks for the info.

Heh. Actually, I'm hoping that the base is really a female, wearing a strap-on.

Anyone else agree that the base just has some weird adapter in it?

I'm going to work, and I'm going to ask the previous owner, who is a co-worker. Then, tonight, I'll check to see if anyone else has responded to this thread. Then, I'll probably try to remove whatever is stuck in the base.

I think that every antenna I have ever seen has a male connector, meaning that the base should be a female. So, if you cant get the male part out of the base, you will have to find an adapter.

I talked with the previous owner, and he said that it is an aftermarket antenna, but that he didn't modify the base. However, he said that there may be an adapter in there.

Anyway, I tried to twist the male end out of the base, and it wouldn't come out, and now the base is messed up.

No big deal. I'm going to buy a new base.
