Aftermarket Dizzy?

Hi all--

I'm thinking of replacing my stock distributor with an aftermarket so I can run thicker plug wires and have a larger cap. What kind of aftermarket dizzy are you running and do you like it? I'd like something that looks mostly stock--black cap, black wires--but that isn't set in stone.

I have heard that the MSD billet dis. works well, but hey, i am just a guy with a six cyl.....don't listen to me haha

I heard billet ANYTHING on your car adds 50 HP at the rear wheels!

I'd heard that, too, but I want to hear first hand before I drop big bucks on one.

You don't need an aftermarket dist to run big wires or cap. Got to your local favorite parts house. There can be found in plentiful supply a stock small to large cap adapter that was used on many 80's Ford V-8's with Duraspark distributors ( also fits points types too) Use it with the EFI large dist cap and rotor, and for wires, Ford Racing list's black 9mm ready made wires for small blocks ( Summit and many others stock these for around $45 a set) I'm running two points distbutors ( one's rebuilt, the other , a 390 unit is still as it lef the factory in 68) with Pertronix units with this setup and on the roller 5.0 in my Ranger have found that it's good for 7500 rpms without missing a beat.

I can't say it looks stock, but the MSD Pro Billet distributor is the nicest one I've ever worked with. I replaced my all electric Mallory with the MSD so I could gain more control over the curve. The difference was mind boggling...

D--Excellent idea--and much cheaper. Will the adapter work with a petronix module? EDIT--Duh. I see you ARE running this setup. Sheesh.

Of course, this all may be for naught as Ivan may force me to lash pontoons to the side of the 'stang and take to the high seas--or at least Lake Maurepas. (I'd have to get an eye patch and a jolly roger, of course.)

Pro-bellit by MSD is great but unless you aren't using it with an MSD box. It won't work. You are better off sticking with your current distributor and upgrading the points with pertronicx ignition. The pertronicx kit is significantly less than the few hundred you will be paying for the distributor and whatever else is required and put it towards some nice wires like the 8.5mm MSD wires.

I'm running and older Mallory module. Had it in there for years. That's why I'm concerned that a cap adaptor won't work.

You can get the Ready To Run version like I have so you don't need the MSD box.

True True but that is a lot of money to replace an already working distributor unless he was planning on getting the MSD box already.

It's not worth it unless you want it. I run 9mm's on my stock dizzy body with stock cap. However, I have recurved the unit ($25.00), replaced the points with Pertronix and use a high performance coil. I run a .060 gap. Unless you want to look, it is not worth it in my opinion and experience.

It's worth it just to be able to buy the 9mm Ford Racing wires that come ready to run, they've got post type terminals, they're even numbered already ( for those of us who may be numericallly challenged ) Personally I HATE to strip and crimp terminals to spark plug wires. Rather take a good ass whooping.

Lots of different wires out there already to go, like Taylors, Accell's etc. They are spiral wound and low resistance and are custom fitted to your V8. You can get setups where you will be able cut your own. I've done this and it isn't too bad. But if you don't want to do it, buy some that are already done. Those, and a decent coil, etc. and you'll be good good to go.....
