I already had the F/R gear in my 66, I contacted F/R and found that since their gear has a coupler on the one piece shaft, their column would be an easy install. Read that as being, not cutting of the shaft or gear removal, not a problem for you but in my situation it made the deal.
I like the column, it seems well made, the tilt mechanizm works smoothly. I chose to add the optional turn signal lever headlight dimmer switch, this is not very well engineered, two very fine wires that must be 10000 gauge have to threaded from the turn signal switch mounting area thru the shell of the column and exit where the turn signal wires already are. I think I repeated this 5 or 6 times for various reasons, oops forget to thread the wires thru the opening where the stalk will mount and the like. I did measure and cut a piece of heat shrink tubing that I applied over these wires hoping that it will act as a chafe gaurd and not allow the wires to be ruined the first time I drive the car.
The instructions for wiring are pretty good, if you are familar with the wiring or have access the diagram it should be no problem. This column has a switch for the 4 way flashers, not sure if I'll use it or the one in my glove box. The kit includes a horn relay, again easy connections. The dimmer has it's own relay, also not hard to figure out or mount.
The plate for mounting the coulumn to the floor fit almost correctly, I did have to put a rolled like bend in one edge. I used the old one as a template and it was pretty easy to do. This column is smaller in diameter than the original, they provide a shim for the upper mount and the new plate takes care of the lower mount. I still have to figure out how to make a sleeve so the column sleeve will be sealed tightly at the firewall.
I have the U joint they recommend for the connection between the column and the gear, it has one set screw with a lock nut to secure the joint to the sector shaft. Hmmmmm, that doesn't sound very secure, the current extension is round and is held together with a roll pin that extends all the way thru the coupler and shaft. I'll probably going to drill corresponding hole in the U joint collar and use the roll pin over. The setscrew will be helpful in lining everything up, not real excited about putting my life on the line with a single 5/16 set screw that is holding everything together.
Then we get to the problems with mounting my Moto Lita wheel. The adapter would not slide far enough down the shaft for the splines to engage, I used my Dremel to open up the casting till it would fit. The horn buttom and turn signal cam required a ton of work in order to get right. I took some photos of what I did to the adapter and posted them on my CarDomain pages. If I had purchased a GM style adapter from Moto Lita and a GM spline universal column instead of the Ford spline column this may not have required that much work. Who knows, I'm not going to be doing it over again to find out.
Wow, after reading this over maybe you need to take a close look at the Ididt unit.
