AGED TIRE WARNING !!!

good video, but most of us go through tires so fast it doesnt really concern us...

I don't buy any of these stories. I've ran a pair of 1999 Goodyear GSC 315-35-R17's for the summer of 2006-2007 with no issues. I have 2003 tires on my 04 Cobra and they're fine.

Hmm, never checked mine. Maybe I will, just put new tires on my truck. But my question is this, when should dealers take them off the shelf? 2 years, 4 years? Without a law, how can they be held responsible?

Continental recommends not to use tire that is 8 years or older.

I bought my rears about 6 months ago and they were made in the 33rd week of 06, so I guess I'm still safe, my fronts are marked on the inside so I don't know about them, But I do have experiance with some tires that wasn't so good, I had a 70's chevy nova, bought what we thought were brand new tires for the front, less than 500 miles on them and the front left just blew this huge bubble on the tread of the tire, it was about 2 inches out and about 7 inches long, I thought the tire popped due to the massive vibration but it just swelled somehow, the passenger side tire did the exact same thing about a month later except it did blow out and riped about a 12 inch section of tread off with it and ruined my fender the fender well and one my year old cragers, the tires were 8 years old when the tire shop installed them. They were Coopers if interested, which is why I no longer like Coopers.
My present rear tires are Coopers though, so I guess I didn't learn my lesson

Oh and when I owned the car all the driving was on very flat and smooth roads, they were never curbed or ran into a pothole or anything of that nature, when the tires blew I was on flat asphalt running about 35mph.

I've never bought new tires in 10 years of driving and owning several vehicles. The used tire shelf at the local shop charges 10 bucks a tire so that's what I've always bought for many years.

The tires on my '84 are almost 9 years old. They're dry-rotting for sure, but they still hold air, and they're WAY smoother-riding on the highway than the Fuzion HRi tires I bought brand new for my notch a couple of years ago. I'll probably drive on 'em until they either wear down, explode, or I can afford something better (the '84's tires are WAY undersized and throw off my speedo).

mine in the rear are from 00. oh well. there gonna go up in smoke soon. new tires for rear are from 05. tires in front are from 03 i beleive and the passenger side has a bulg in the sidewall that worries me lol.

What age a tire should be tossed depends on who you talk to. Some say 6 years, others say 8 years. What is true though is that oxygen does break down the rubber in tires. Filling with nitrogen does help, but unless the tires are stored in pure nitrogen, they began breaking down the day they were made.

There are other factors that go into how long the tire last. What's the humidity? temp? how much sun do they see? etc.

The idea is to issue a blanket statement to get these tires off the road before any of these probs start to surface.

When i buy tires, i get them as new as possible...preferable 6 mos or newer. A lot of "specials" on tirerack are tires that have sat in a warehouse for 3-4 years.

Tires are the only part of the car that touches the road, so i do not cheap out when it comes to tires.

toyo's are the best of the best made...thats what i got and have no problems

I dont consider 200 bux a tire at a discount price cuz i got family that works at a tire shop cheap...z rated tires arent cheap

I love my khumo's. Stickiest street tire I have had! I have had every tire known to man and I hated my BF Goodriches more than anything. The Toyos are great for...well...5-8k and then the hardened base comes in to play and the sticky side dissapears faster than a dress on prom night.... its always a matter of opinion.

I work @ a tire dealer and have been working here for over 15 years. It is a very rare occasion that we see a tire blow for the reason of a manufacturing defect. Yes Firestone had there issues with the ATX, but to me it's kinda odd that most of the vehicle that had the problem were the Ford Explorer's and I think they were mostly on the driver's rear. It is a proven fact that most people do not maintain their tires. We deal with about 60-70 cars a day, for all service work. We are considered a full service tire store with 18 bays. We sell our fair share of tires.
Main point is what I think DARK said, and I learned this @ one of the 1st ride and drives that I have attended. "TIRES ARE THE ONLY THING MAKING CONTACT WITH THE ROAD ON YOUR VEHICLE"!! I have quality tires on my Stang, and definetly my wife's Slugburban.
Old tires are like TIME BOMBS. It kills me to see all the money some of us have put into our cars performance and appearance wise, but then choose to go with the cheapest tire that is avail???? I don't get that... I don't bash it either. I just look @ it as some just need to be a bit more educated about their tires.. Your car , your decision. I run BFG's on mine, Goodyears on the slugburban.

Here is a prime example for our folks on here.
My sister just went 3 weeks ago and bought a pretty sweet 1971 Corvette Stingray. This car sold for just under $20k. They towed it back to Charleston and drove it to our shop to get it in the air and really do an inspection. Her 1st question before it got here was "Bub look @ the tires good for me" . The tire's the previous owner installed were Uniroyal GTS white letters. Not a bad tire at all, very popular because of the lettering. Seen them on many Hot rods. Would sell them in a heartbeat. The dates however were 2000. Thread looked like they only had about 1k miles on them. I told her 1st thing replace the tires. Her response, man they look so good though. I said sure they look great, but are you going to drive the car? Answer well yea.. Enough said we are replacing the tires. Best case senerio you get a flat and pull over and change it. Or one comes apart and rips the hell out of the fender on this car. HMMM how much will that cost? Or one comes apart and you lose control and kill yourself? Point was taken, we put BFG Radial T/A's which is the most popular tire for this type car. Dates were 2008's.

Guys SORRY TO RANT, but I feel it's important for everyone to understand.
Let's face it WE ARE NOT PROF RACE CAR DRIVERS so we really don't know what to expect when a tire blows.

One more thing, if you only buy 2 tires @ a time and your car does not have a staggered fitment. Put the new tires on the rear. You can argue all you want, but until you go out on a test course and get to expeirence the difference, take my or word, or the tire manufactures word. That is the safest place for them..

Sounds like another reason for people to sue in this sue happy country. I agree with having an expiration date though, that seems reasonable. I had the front left tire blow out on my 83' F-150 4x4 going down the freeway at 70mph and was fine.
