Air Conditioning Question

I have been looking at 1967-1973 Mustangs. One thing that has me puzzled
is the number of cars that are advertised "fully restored", but, reading the ad,
you find out the a/c is "not hooked up" or "just needs charge". Is there a problem with the Ford a/c units that people can't get them fixed? After the expense of a restoration, why doesn't the a/c work?

A couple of things about AC in classic stangs:

The one's that don't have their AC's hooked up probably balk at the price of r-12 (about $80 a can with, if memory serves, a 2.5 can system) AND, if you have a slow leak, this can be a constant problem.

I converted my system to r-134a which is much, much cheaper, but doesn't cool as well as r-12. It requires higher pressures and other things. Plus, you have to change the oil in your compressor and replace the dryer.

My system will KEEP the car cool if it is cool already, but not cool it if it is hot inside.

So, if you want ICE COLD air, keep the r-12 setup after making sure it is tight.

But, then again, if we wanted practical cars, we wouldn't drive 36 year old cars in the first place!

Those two terms ("compressor not hooked up" and "just needs a charge") are basic terms to say the car has AC but everything needs to be rebuilt. Once rebuilt you will enjoy years of comfort. The previous owner is just too lazy to finish his/her version of a "total restoration". Buyer beware for more lies.
