Aligning the motor to the trans when installing.

OK guys I have just installed the new motor. I have the motor mounts bolted in place, but Im unsure how to do the bellhousing to the block. The bell housing is attached to trans (T-5), the trans is still in the car and hooked up save for the clutch cable and the trans mounts are unbolted so it can slide back. My question is, how do I know if I have the input shaft in the clutch? as it sits the bellhousing is about 3 inches from the block, and it is pushed back. I havent got under there and slid it up to meet the block. Will the input shaft just slide in or do the teeth fit a certain way?

I always pull the trans with the motor to avoid this prob.

The shaft will need to align with the clutch.
do you have the align tool?

yea i aligned it already... I was just wondering if it would just slide on in

try turning the output end of the trans.

That may help to align the input end if its in gear???

One the dowel pins on the block are lined up with the bellhousing and the input shaft splines are lined up, the should slide together effortlessly- it might take some wiggling of the motor and trans to make it happen though. Also, dont forget to install the shim plate between the engine and bellhousing! Once they join together, there should be no gap between the engine and bellhousing - trying to pull them together with the bolts is guaranteed to crack the bellhousing. Good Luck!

And make sure you keep your fingers clear of that area also....the trans usually falls into place when you least expect it

Will the input shaft just slide in or do the teeth fit a certain way?

The splines on the input shaft must align with the spline on your clutch. The very end of your input shaft will then fit into your pilot bearing which resides in the crank. Put a little grease on the input shaft and pilot bearing. A trans jack helps out a lot in these situations. I agree with the other advice, don't force the trans into place with the bolts. Instead, try turning the output shaft (where the d/s goes) to get the input shaft to line up with the clutch splines. If this still doesn't work then have someone push the clutch pedal all the way in. The trans should slide right in. Good luck.

thank you guys.. I asked my bro to give me a hand tomarrow so between the 2 of us we should be able to get it with the advice... Question, last one i think... if i were to use the trans jack, should i just let the motor down? When i installed it it kinda leans toward the back cuz it isnt hooked to the trans. SHould i jack the motor and the trans seperate so they are even or just let the motor hang and jack the trans into place?

I'd just drop the trans out of the car, then bolt the bell to the motor and slide the trans into the bell. Almost painless if you know how to do it. Leave the motor droop so the trans slided up into the bell.
