Hmmm, lemme chime in, :ZipIt: . I have Borla Pro XS 2 1/2", very nice muffler, will pick up a few lb-ft of torque over most mufflers and it's quiet. I can actually hear damn AOD whining and the frickin' weatherstripping whistling crapola .

When I had flows on my car I had long tubes, and the "drone" was there. I like the sound but every stang in my town has them. I just wanted something that would stand out.

I'd rather not bother with long tubes. If the dynomax super turbos are quiet like you say, then i should be fine. Kinda sounds like you and I have the same "type" of ears.

I always liked the "flowmaster" sound. Over the past year or two i have noticed that the WHUUUUUUU (drone) was hurting my ears. Friday night, enough is enough. I just cant take it anymore. Whether its my ears hurting and/or me getting a little older - i dont care. THOSE damn things have gotta go!

Oh, those dynomax dont drone or have very little drone. Right mike?

Thanks mike!

I am running Super Turbos with high flow cats. They drone but not as bad as flows.

I'm telling you... I spent 1 hour each way to and from college between 1998 - 2002. I drove the 93 every day at 70 to 75MPH for the majority of the trip and there was zero drone in the cockpit. I would like to mention that the 93 was stock (completely) just for clarification. You will be able to hold conversations in the car for sure. They are noticably quiter than Flow's

You ears won't be dissapointed

The drone zone seems to run at 1700-2200 RPM. With 3.73's, & stock diameter tires, at 70 MPH, that puts you at 2328 RPM, which is pretty much out of the drone zone.

One of the ideas that has bee kicked around is offsetting the muffler on one side by 3"-4". The resulting phase shift would reduce the resonance by the out of phase sound cancelling out the sound of the other muffler. So far it's only a theory, since no one has tried it.

Steeda clains their sleeper muffler doesn't drone at the 1700-2200 RPM range, but does at 3500 and up. I got this from one of their tech guys who said that they worked with Walker Manufacturing Co, the maker of the DynoMax mufflers. The drawback is the muffler only comes in stainless steel and is expensive, $140 a piece for a 2 1/2" size common to modified Mustang exhaust systems.

I would be willing to try out the muffler offset, but where do you have room to move the thing 3-4"? I just picked up another stang with flows... i cant stand them, like my mac alot better.

I have also read that using 2 different mufflers considerably reduces drone... not sure if that is true or not(I think I read it on a forum).

The do you have room question is a good one. What I know to be true is that the stock hanger setup would not work and you would need to devise some clever means to support the muffler & tailpipe.

The stock system uses two different size mufflers to kill the drone.

Dose anyone notice a metalic resonating sound with flows? Not anything like a drone, I like that sound. I'm talking an out-of-the-ordinary metalic vibration sound. Its really annoying and occurs just above idle, sound like crap.

Yes - I have an annoying buzz at idle or just above. Push on the tailpipe and it goes away. It's not anything hitting or rubbing, I have checked. I think that one or more of the baffles inside the muffler has come loose and is moving around. Either that, or the muffler heat shield has lost one of the spot welds and is vibrating.

My suggestion is what richker is pointing at -- I suspect a weld inside the muffler has come undone allowing pieces or portions of pieces inside to vibrate at a certain frequency. Replacement is the only practical option -- if in fact that's what's causing the problem. tylerrocks - You've got yourself a full blown dilemma on your hands.

Yeah tyler, thats the fillings in my teeth vibrating when i'm cruising at 70mph!

Jrichker, i know the stock mufflers are offset by several inches. Arent most of the catback the same way? If you look at the pipe going into the mufflers, they look offset. Could be just the picture angle to though.

50bomber, i was interested in the borla xs, but could not find any info on which muffler/size i needed for my application. Stock H pipe with 2 chamb flows, stainless LX tailpipes.

Okay guys, summit doesnt have the 2.250 turbo catback in stock right now. Should i just get the 2.5 catback system? I MAY go with a 2.5 catted h pipe later provided in wont cause that stupid drone.

Any suggestions?

thanks

I have the Dynomax system now for 10 yrs. Maybe 10K mileage on them. The tips still look great, clean them w/ the blue metal polish stuff. They sound great, not too loud, but when I get on it, you know it. I have 3.73's so no drone. They are nice because you don't sound like every other Mustang that has Flows. Not a flame gentlemen.

I had that once befor. A weld on one of my cats had broken. I just fired up the welder fixed that problem. I actually had the hpipe off earlier this year. I went ahead and welded up all 4 cats (shields) while i had it off.

7-Up - "They are nice because you don't sound like every other Mustang" I know what you mean -- with muffler I have on mine, believe it or not, people tell me they think it sounds like a factory big block....

But again that is just what my ears like.... there is still drone, but much more tolerable than the flowmaster 40's.

I would normally agree, but the catback seems to be of high quality, 2 years and no problems, and the tips still look good! ehem... i also live in las vegas
