get an H pipe , the factory H pipe is the cause of the droning ......its the choke point keeping the exhaust from free flowing , I was about to take my flowmasters off as well .....had a gutted factory H , and stock shorties , decided to spend the money on the shorties and off road H pipe rather than change out mufflers first and the car is half as loud inside the car as before but sounds a whole lot meaner idling and when you hit the throttle , I lost a little torque from idle to about 2K rpms but above that you can feel the car making more power than before as well ...

Ehhh, the factory H-Pipe is not the cause of the drone, in fact, the four cat-cons helps to quiet the whole system down. In fact any aftermarket H, X-pipe with only two cats (or none) WILL be louder. I agree with jrichker on the offset mufflers, go measure stock mufflers on a 5.0 (:rlaugh: if you can find one now, maybe in a museum or something :lol: ) One will be like 1-2" longer than the other.

Re: Edelbrock RPM mufflers, I have had them, but removed them due to them being waaaay too loud. In fact I have the rest of their catback, with Borla mufflers welded in. I would say its very high quality, mandrel bent, polished stainless steel tailpipes 2.5" diameter. When I first got it they sounded really nice, kind of like a 351 with flowmasters, but like 1-2 months later, the packing inside has burned out and man were they loud. In fact at WOT the ear piercing sound they made my ears hurt, but what a sound :hail2: . At that point, I think they were louder than Flowmaster, since inside they have a dual flow path that looks like this --<====>---, packed with stainless steel wool and fiberglass to quiet the thing down, but after the packing is gone, holy mothers against excessive interior resonance, unite!

:OT: Not to highjack the thread but does anybody have any experience with catbacks sold by FRPP? Or their "Dual Mode" mufflers? They may be the solution to the original poster's problem.

I wish it was that simple. I have FMS shorties, a MAC cat H pipe, and 3 chamber flows. The drone is definitely LOUD from 1700-2200 RPM!!!

I'm glad to see that they are working for you. It's just that I have had too many bad experiences with MAC products over the years. Prybars getting header tubes to line up, busted knuckles and strpipped bolts, leaking headers and h-pipes. etc.....:Damnit:

I actually tried to give them another shot about a year ago when getting a throttle body for a friends car. It looked like someone sanded it with sandpaper and then tried to buff it out. There were flat spots all over it from the sanding and the throttle blade would stick. :notnice: I sent it back and had him buy an Accufab which he said was well worth the extra $$, and I agree. After this I told myself that I would never buy another MAC product again.

I guess some get lucky. Guess living in Vegas would mabybe give you an edge.:nice:

I heard an exhaust sound clip on mustangexhaust.com and they sound similar to the MagnaFlows, just a hush quieter it seemed.
Exotically aggressive sounding still the same, but it's hard to say. I might buy an Edelbrock cat-back next week .. maybe :shrug:

I like to hear a little tone to the pipes, but 40s ARE too much.
On the other end though, some Borla's are so quiet you can hear the fan belt snaking :D

:Word: On the hwy, with 3:73s at 80 mph ~2700rpm, you can literally hear transmission (not rear end) gear whine and damn sunroof weatherstripping buffeting in the wind.
Edelbrock = 10@WOT on quality scale
Borla = 9@WOT on quailty scale, but much less quantity. They do have a unique and wicked sounding rumble down low@1500-2000 rpm, they sound like a BB.

My friend has Borla mufflers and tips, and if you don't like the tips (though I do) they're expensive and that'll save you a good bit of money. Sorry I don't have a part number or anything...

I can't remember his exact setup. I think Hooker longtubes, gutted cats and the Borla mufflers and tips. It is NOT a quiet car, it just doesn't have useless or annoying drone. Sounds amazing in my opinion

yeah, just from reading experiences like yours I will never buy anything but mufflers from them unless they have a complete redesign. I just like the sound of the macs. My favorite sound is a borla catback system on a stock ls1. They also sound ungodly nice on a 4.0l aurora engine. I have never heard borlas on a stang. The macs are the closest thing I have found :)

I have Thrush Turbos on the 79, been there since 1986. Dynomax now owns them and they have been good to deal with. Their mufflers do last well. They are loud, but I have driven thousands of interstate miles in that car, and its perfectly fine at 65-80 for me.

I just took the Dynomax turbos off the 82 and put Flowmaster Super 40's on. Longtubes, 3ft of pipe and mufflers. So far, with 4.10 gears, it sounds deeper and less annoying. I guess it does drone some, but, hey, I have no back seat, no carpet and no sound deadening. I like them, and they dont seem harsh outside the car either. I vote for them. If I had tailpipes, they would probably be ok for uptown.

as far as quality there catbacks seem fine...the original 2.5 mac catback i bought for my car back in 2001 when it was stock is now sounding better then ever on my newly acquired 89 GT...a bit dirty but not rusty

with my stock engine i had LT headers and a off road H with the mac cat back and had almost zero drone...but with my new engine with LT's and a pro chamber it seems to have alittle more...but theres a hell of alot of changes that have been made, so who knows what caused it

i have the american thunder cat back on my car with the 2 chambers flowcans with a h-pipe and its loud.i just put a x-pipe on the car and talk about night and day difference.the x-pipe really quite it down and runs a hell of alot better.i cant even hear them that much untill i get on it.just another option.x-pipe if you dont have one already

I was underneath my car last week doing some exhaust work and I noticed that when I shook my muffler, I heard a rattling sound. I kept shaking it and I think that one of the baffles has completely rusted off and is just flopping around inside the muffler. They were on the car when I bought it 3 years ago and I think they are the "original" 40 series that were used in the american thunder catback. So they are damn old.

Anyway, I think I'm gonna give a set of 3 chambers a try. If anybody has any for sale, let me know.
