OK,
I just got a air compressor with a impact socket, tried to remove the altenator pulley and no luck! Is it reverse thread? I put some wd-40 on , also how do you hold the actual pulley (fan) from spinning? Any help would be great.
Thanks alot!

A good impact gun should get it off no problem. You could try to hold the pulley still by doing this on the car with belt in place, thats what I did.

If you have the belt off put it back on until your have it lose. Also if that doesnt work, try putting a screwdriver in the alternator fan blades, thats what i did and it worked for me, and i didnt even have an impact wrench

Stock alternator - put a 5/16" allen wrench in the alternator shaft and a 15/16" wrench on the nut. The allen wrench hole in the alternator shaft enables you to keep it from turning while you wrench on the nut.

I would not recommend sticking a screw driver into the fan blades. It's very easy to bend/misalign things that way. They make a 'strap wrench' - a big handle with a piece of rubber strap not unlike a fan belt. You can wrap it around the pulley and cinch it up - hold the pulley against the impact wrench. If you have the allen socket, as jrichker suggests - put a wrench on the bolt, and put the allen socket on your impact - be sure you set the impact wrench to turn clockwise if you try this approach.

I tried and tried with no luck. I just installed the altenator back on with the stock pulley. I will try later to see if I can get it off now with the belt back on. Will it make any differance if I leave the stock pulley on? If I do buy a new and improved chrome altenator, will it come with the stock pulley or what?
Thanks again for all of your guys help.

Hi,

I had a pulley put on by a shop and it came loose. So I got another lock washer and nut....custom very wierd size. Then I used an old belt, big set of water pump pliers and locked that with vice grips...kind of a make shift strap wrench. Torqued the sucker to 80 ft lbs and it is holding fine.

Good Luck, Don
