I recently upgraded to a 140 amp Powermaster alternator and I was wondering if i should upgrade to a thicker battery wires. Also i was wondering if someone could tell me the benefits of having an Optima red top compared to just a regular die hard battery and if it's really necessary.

if you are running the 140A alt off of the stock pair of black with orange stripe wires, I would recommend you stop running it that way immediately as it poses a fire hazard. Those two wires aren't sized properly to carry that current load. You should run a 4 gauge fused power wire from the charging stud to the corresponding post on the starter solenoid.
Do a search for alternator upgrade and you will find much information.

Yeah the car isn't running yet. There are sooo many threads to look through for alternator upgrades.

See the alternator thread in the Useful Tech sticky at the top of the forum page. I have always found Jrichker's posts to be the most concise regarding the upgrade (one of his good ones is in that thread).

Good luck.

As far as Battery Cables, I bought a complete set of Police Mustang Stuff. When I get around to doing my Alt and Buying a New Battery I will install them.
