Hey guys, I recently bought a 88 gt and this is my first muscle car. The guy I bought I from built the engine from scratch, but after I got it, it ran for a few days but then wouldn't work. I changed the battery and it ran fine for a day but my the end of a half hour drive the radio shut off randomly and the lights got very dim, all the sensors were erratic, and the car misfired from time to time. So it came down to the alternator going bad, my question is that what options do I have to other than a stock alternator. I know there are different ones that work with some work done on it, but are there any ones that just bolt straight on and have some more amps than the stock 75 amps. I'm tight on cash and want to find something from a junkyard that I could throw on there.
Thanks in advanced.

FIrst thing you need to do is run the codes and see what is wrong with the car. I would be pissed if I bought a car and 4 days later it crapped out on me. Bring the alternator to Autozone and have it checked out before you start throwing money at it.

I agree with Mikestang in you dumping the codes and inspecting for loose wires or corrosion in the cables before you start throwing money at it. That said, an Alternator upgrade is a must on these cars so do a search for 3G and you will find what you are looking for.

94-95 Mustang alternator. Also found on ford taurus and windstars of the same year span.

It's dubbed the 3G (3rd generation) alternator.

Some modification needs ot be made so read up a bit. You should be able to snag one at a boneyard and snip about 4" of the wiring. You need the single, 1-wire, stator plug. Some parts stores do sell this new for a few bucks.

Pulley needs to be changed to the smaller sized Fox pulley. You might need a 5/8" washer for a spacer.

Like previously mentioned, remove alternator and take it to your local auto parts store and have them check it, it's FREE! Also check your grounds and connections at your starter solenoid.

LateModel has a great 3G upgrade kit, I have it myself. There's even a "how to" install video that walks your through the process. :nice:
