Do I have to use a specific 94/95 alternator on a 95 motor? I have an old alternator for an early 302 that I was jsut going to swap the pulley on but it did not seem to fit. I dont know if its my valve covers or if the alternator is a different size.
Any 3G or 6G should work, though some require some clock-work. If the alt is so old that it has two plugs (3 wires each), that sounds like a 2G and is not worth bothering with.
Older 302 cars use a differnet plug system for the power cables, and are not as powerful as the 3G or 94/95 units.
The answer would be no. Most people with older stangs upgrade to the 94/95 style alternator. Thus the term 3G upgrade. You can usually find them pretty cheap on ebay used, but there still used.
Alterstart has some good prices on new ones though. Usually cheaper than your local parts store for a new one. Hope that helps......
Yeah I dont know exactly what alternator I had. The motor was originally a early 70's motor that had been rebuild and I had gotten a new alternator for it. The problem is with clearance. It seems like it is to deep to fit in the bracket.
*when I say its to deep I mean that the prongs on the back where you would hook the wiring harness in were hitting on my valve cover.*
Shane is spot on. I run a 3G Alterstart on my 88 GT vert and it works like a champ (170 amp unit, 75 rated amps at idle, 135 bucks).
I would not bother trying to squeeze that other alt in - unless it was seriously rewound, it was set up for a non-puter car with few electronics. Foxes use a 65 amp unit and that is not enough for an elec fan converted car.
I am still running w/ all my basic electronics in the car and I had a nice strong electric fan on it before. My question was really about the size differences between the 2 alternators.
