alternator swap questions

I want to switch over to a 1-wire high amp alternator on my '86 GT. I'm thinking of running a big GM one. Whoops, I said the 'G' word. Anyways, there are 2 plugs coming out of the alternator right now with a total of 4 wires. If I run a 1 wire up to the solenoid on the firewall, will I have to mess with anything else, like if these wires are going to other stuff? Pretty much I'm just wondering how to convert it over. I am running a large dual speed fan and an electric water pump, I don't have any stereo equipment and don't plan on adding anything big in that department. I'm thinking about a 120 amp or so.

you should try a ford 130 amp. just get a rebuilt unit and return old 75amp for core. I forgot how to do the wiring but its simple. i can't get to look at mine right now.

Why not do a 6G swap?? Direct bolt on, just run the 1 wire and one of the factory plugs plugs directly in. Just gotta tie in the stator wire and you are good to go

I don't know a whole lot about the ford 1 wire big amp ones. Any pics, daigrams, or explanations would be greatly appreciated.

If you convert to the one wire alt (and keep it as a one-wire), the new fused powercable is about all you'd need to run.


I do agree about using a 3 or 6G however. You can get a standalone regulator plug (FFI and PA-P both make them). You'll need a 12 volt key-on power source and that's about it in terms of reusing your OEM wiring. You'll need the new power cable too.
