Alternator Upgrade ?

I need to upgrade my stock alt. I was thinking about going to a 100Amp chrome one. What is the deal with the one wire alt vs. what is on the car ? Should I go bigger that that ? I am going to be movining the battery to the trunk this weekend. any suggestions are welcome. also, has anyone used the painless cutoff that can be mounted anywhere, for cutting power off to the car ?

What accessories do you have in the car? I have a pretty draining system and the 100amp is workin fine for me so far, no dimming/brightening of the lights at different speeds, etc. I had three wires coming off my old alt that went into a little harness and just plugged out where two adapters (I dont' know the right term) met. The one wire just goes straight to the + battery terminal.

Unless you are concerned with concourse correctness, I recommend the one-wire alternators. I have alot of electronics and opted for the chrome Powermaster 140 amp alternator. You can just unplug the original voltage regulator and remove it, if you wish. You just do away with the alternator wiring harness altogether, and can cover the unused plug on the wiring harness with a piece of shrinkwrap to protect it from the elements.

I have an electric fan that just takes about 1-2 volts of the meter when I turn it on. In addition I am adding Tri-Bar Head lights this week, and they are a little stronger than the stock ones. I have all MSD on the car, NOS with a Bottle heater coming soon and I am moving the battery to the rear this weekend.

a 100 amp should be noo problem. The expensive driving lights and stereo systems are what really draw serious power. The ease of the installation will surprise you, It can be a 5-10 min job no problem.

You will need thick wire, prolly a 4-gauge...or is it 2... (mine is about same diameter as my battery cables) to run all the way to your battery though. That'll be a little extra money...nothin crazy, but more than $20.

Will my volt meter gauge still work with a one wire installation?

I just bought the 140 amp black alt. they sent me a card with it that said it actually made 156 amps when they tested it, I definatly dont need that much, I would have gone with the 100

Not to hijack the thread, but norcal, did you buy the chrome 100 amp mentioned? I just installed one but wired it up as worth advised me in this thread http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=489444 and it seems to be providing power, but I think there is a short somewhere as the battery has a horrible charge life now... could it be because this is in fact a 1-wire alt that I wired with the 3 wire + ground harness?
