Alternator upgrade

I am wanting to put a higher output alternator into my 98gt. I have the typical UD pulley problem with the alternator not charging as well as it did with the stock pullies and I also have several autometer gauges installed. I don't know how high of a capacity alternator I can go without doing all the wire and fuse swaps. Or, should I not even bother with a better alt and just get a beefier battery??
