Aluminum DS worth the cash?

i have always considered an alum DS but its over 200$ and thats alot for something that doesnt really do much.

i have had a small DS vibration for a while and i figured it would help. plus people on here reccomended it also in a recent topic.

so do the alum DSs usually come vibration free. will there be any other difference besides smooth operation.

its less rotating mass but i doubt it would be noticed.

let me know your guy's expierences with them...

I only paid $60 for mine, it's from a salvage yard off a AWD windstar, just get the rear one an put ur flange on it.

You wont notice a difference in the quickness of your car that is for sure.

I thought they needed to be modified a little....If they bolt right in I know where one is at the local JY that I can have tor $30....maby I will get it

i just changed the rear flange an put in new u joints, if u get the 2wd one it will have to be shortened, if u find an awd or 4wd (which ever they call it) it's the right length.

I think there are better things you could spend your money on. You could just have your stock drive shaft rebalanced.

After my 3.55 Gears were put in my Stang picked up a rear end Vibe and the Aluminum D/S cleared it right up, it was worth the cash IMHO.

The situation that Shaker noted is where the Alum DS shines. Unless one is seeing some vibes from the stocker, I'd leave well enough alone. I'd get an Alum DS as a fix for an issue, not for performance gains alone. It is lighter but also has a shifted Moment (it's diameter is greater than a stocker), which offsets it's lighter weight when seen from a performance perspective.

FWIW, the stocker's are not difficult to twist or bend. Couple that with a fairly low critical speed (and aftermarket gears), and it's not hard to see why people get vibes.

I got mine because I had a bad vibe above 70, Me and my brother installed it and as soon as I pulled away from his house it seemed smoother. When I took it out on the highway I was amazed at how far 80 dollars and 35 minutes could go. If you are looking for performance this isnt gonna help too much. If youre attempting to fix a drive line vibration, an aluminum drive shaft will quite possibly be your thing.

i didnt know they were a bigger diameter than stock, my mufflers are quite large and on big bumps the pass. side hits both the frame rail and driveshaft(usually framerail), if i get a bigger aluminum shaft it will rub the muffler..looks like that's out

hmm.... I have flowmasters, and I dont have a problem with anything hitting anything under there.

the last owner had the exhaust installed by the worst possible guy locally...it doesn;t amaze me that it doesn't fit right, i have done some work to the exhaust myself to make it better..with enough fitting i'm sure i could make it work, does anyoneknow the actual diameters of the two driveshafts?

I don't know the exact diameter of the Aluminum DS,but I could tell you this it will be a tight fit inside a bolted together Lakewood driveshaft safety loop,minus all the washer/spacer . About 1/2 " all around clearance. I had it on my last Mustang before the new style SL comes on the market. And it was a pain to get the clearance needed . But once on it is okey.

sweet I know where there is a AWD areostar (actually 2 or 3 of them) at the local J/Y and I will be grabbing them up for sure
