Since I have had this 427 in the car, it has been hard to start (read: grinding coming from the starter). I pulled it out and found an that it didnt appear to be extending far enough due to an 1/8" shim. Took it out and the problem still exists. It seems as if the gears aren't meshing now. I have a theory that the wrong flex plate is in there. How many teeth should it have? Could the flex plate be too small?

bendix hanging up?

This is what I was thinking. If it's weak it won't kick out properly or stay out and hang when it's supposed to retract. I've also gotten used flywheels/flexplates that had the lead edge on the gear teeth boogered up, and the starter didn't want to engage properly. Roll it through and inspect it, it may need to be replaced. If you're lucky it's just a bad starter bendix.

This bendix you speak of... Would it cause a grinding noise when engaged? It seems to engage and retract fine, its only when cranking do the awful noises start.

If I get time this week to pull it again, Ill post some pictures for the masses to inspect. In the meantime, I just got home from Lowe's with 800# of cement for a back yard project. 100° weather should make it a barrel of monkeys.
