I was thinking about installing my amp (alpine m500) underneath the rear seats in my 02 convertible. I may have to cut off some of the foam on the seating surface to get it to fit.

I was wondering if anyone has done this and if anyone thinks it may be too hot under there....the amp will be totally squished in there with all the foam.

Thanks!

You'd almost certainly have to find a way to get some airflow to the amp if you did that. Maybe using some pvc pipe with a couple fans...but you'd still have to cut a hole somewhere to bring in the fresh air and expell the hot stuff. And I think you'd definitely have to cut the foam out to fit one in there.

Don't think it'd be a very good idea, if you ask me.

Exactly what joker said... I, personaly "hate" the idea of putting amps under seats.. I avoid it all costs. That said.. there are ways around it. If you think you can somehow get enough airflow around the amplifier then by all means... it's worth a shot if you are short on space.

I'm thinking of putting 2 amps under the rear seats, one on each side. They're right about having enough airflow over the amps to dissipate the heat, though. The way I'm going to make mine is to build an enclosure for them and run a few fans to the side panel with the armrest and get air in through there in a push-pull type setup. I'm going to end up cutting most of the foam out to make room, because I want to have at least an inch or more clearance between the top of the amp and the top of the enclosure.

Avoid under the seats at all costs, is there room to mount on the back of the rear seat?

i would also avoid the idea unless it is absolutely nessessary
they run quite hot and my friend has an amp for example under his rear seat in his jeep and it is exposed to a fairly good amount of fresh air but on a warm day it still turns off since it overheats
unless there is a vent of some sort which would suppy a fairly good supply of air i would strongly disagree

That's primarily the reason I'm still debating putting them there. The reason I was thinking of doing it is for a stealth approach, but I'll probably do something like this behind the rear seats:

i had a rockford 360a2 and a pioneer 150 watt amp on each side of my 95 convertable behind the panel that goes over the speaker and that the seat belt goes into. it took some work to get them inthere but i saved a lot of room in my trunk and neither amp has ever gotten hot and shut down. ANDY
