So, I'm driving my 05 GT, and the "resume" button just falls off the steering wheel. The plastic behind the button just broke. I don't know how because that's one of the least used parts in the car.

So, I go to the dealership. Not only can you not buy the button alone, you have to buy the whole switch. Not just the resume switch, but the whole set of cruise control switches. So, to replace my resume button that decided to lose two tiny plastic ears, I have to buy $200 worth of switches.

It's bad enough that a well-kept 6 year old car has stuff falling off of it, but it's ridiculous to force someone to fork over that much money to replace the part. I thought this level of quality was reserved for Pontiac.

A switch broke on a six year old car! That is a unacceptable quality control

It's a pretty common part, if you don't want new just go to a wrecking yard and get a replacement and do it yourself on the cheap.

When I did the LED swap (green to blue) in my dash I wanted to make a blue LED bulb for the headlight switch. That bulb seems to be the only one in the dash that's an incandescent and you can easily remove it from the switch. Try as I might, I couldn't get a replacement bulb from Ford (didn't want to hack up the original). After much checking by the parts guy, that bulb is not service replaceable (even though it's easy to remove) and you have to buy and entire new switch (about $150 or so). I'm going to hunt one down out of a wreck one of these days - in the meantime it's still green.

+1, you can probably buy the whole steering wheel at a salvage yard for $200

Do you have the base wheel or the leather one? If you have the base one you can probably find someone that upgraded and will sell the old one cheap. I would give my old one away to anyone that wanted to come take it.

Is there any reason the button could not be repaired with some superglue? If it's just the button cover, would that not be worth at least a try? I will regrain from any remarks about the quality of Ford prducts regarding said button. Uh, geez, I think I did so anyway!

If it makes you feel any better, it lasted longer than my Acura's starter and that was $600 (parts+labor).

Well there's your problem. Google: Ford parts. eBay: Ford part numbers. Etc. Unless it's something I HAVE to have immediately, I will never rely on a dealership for parts.

You know, the eleven-year-old truck down in the garage needs new turbo boots - all 6 of them - because two are leaking. I thought they'd last forever. I should have bought a GM.

I'm not trying to be rude. But six years old? And it's the first MY? If your car was an '09 or newer, vent all you'd like.



If it were my car.. I take advantage of things breaking - I turn them into opportunities. If my steering wheel fell apart, I'd install a GT500 wheel - they are

A little research has always yielded savings for me.. I get OEM switches, filters, etc. from powerstrokeshop.com (they specialize in trucks, but I get everything from them).

This might be what you're looking for:
