Another 351 Windsor question

hey everone, just wanted to ask a couple questions. I have just acquired 3 351 windsors. one is a bare block from the early 70's, i think (was told it was a d4 block). Early 70's heads that are stud mount(are those about as good a flow as gt 40's?). Also got a 84 351 windsor longblock and a 89 351 windsor shortblock. My question is, which one would be the stongest for a stroker rebuild and be kinda on the cheaper side of things. i'll have to have them dipped, honed and maybe bored. can i go more than 60 over or will the walls be to thin. I would like to make a 393 stroker out of it. also should i make it a roller or not. I don't know alot about 351's so please help out anyway possible. even if it's links. i am searching threads right now to help but there are alot of things to read.

Use the early block!

A D4 is a 74' block,and its stronger than the others you got.

I wouldnt go any more than .030 over,if you have to .040,.060 and I would strongly consider it to be a track only car.

To make any of them blocks a roller you are gunna need retro fit lifters.Crane makes a good set.But really sense your on the "cheap side of things",just stick with a hyd. falt tappet.

Should be able to build it to put out 325hp to the wheels with out a roller cam.

i would like to stay on the cheaper side but if a roller is going to get me more power i can wait and save. i got the motors cheap and i am waiting to find an old trunk fox body to put it in. i would like to be able to drive it on the street also.

i would wait and save for the money to buy the retro fit roller cam. i want to install one in my 351w aswell. oh and i agree go with the early block.

What about the early 70's stud mount heads. I was told they flow like gt 40 heads. if they do how many cfm is that.

I got a set of some of the dest 351W head made (D0OE),look at the bottom of the runenrs and it will say what heads they are.Yes,they flow like a GT40,but the GT40 doesnt flow much....

It would be somewere around 175-185cfm intake,135-145cfm exhaust.Porting will pick the intake up to probably 220-230cfm,and the exhaust up to 160-170cfm (for an experianced porter).

You could run any HR cam u want...just gotta get the linked Crane lifters that cost $400 im thinking about selling. Only used for 1000-1500 miles. PM if interested.

so if those heads are d0oe heads and i get them ported and polished will they be as good as the afr 225's. because i really don't wanna spend that much on heads.

also, since everyone is saying go with the earlier block, does anyone want to buy any of the other motors off of me.

Not even close . Ya gotta pay to play buddy You'd be better off getting a set of used Twisted Wedge heads out the classifieds for around $800 or so and out the box they will flow better than those old heads with all that work. I'd guess it wouldnt be cheap to get that work done to them. They were the best heads of their day...but in no way shape or form do they even dream of comparing to the stuff we got today. It is no comparison.

You can convert the 74 block to use stock 302 roller lifters. You just need to drill some holes in the lifter valley to bolt down the spider. There are some issues with picking the right cam base circle, but I don't remember the details now.

ok so i'll wait and build it right, can the studs be removed from the early 70's head to make them bold on, also would they be a good head to put on an old 302 just for a little more fun, i don't want all this stuff i just got to go to waste. also how much better do old heads flow compared to the e7's
