Another ? about HCI swap.

I have a quick question about the front part of the oil pan gasket. My stock gasket is rubber and I think metal. It extends to the front of the pan. I had to use a putty knife on these ends to break loose the timing cover. Can I just use some RTV sealant and put the cover back on or do I need to cut these sections out and put the cork gasket tabs that came with the timing cover gasket set? Here's a pic. THX

I reused the stock rubber gasket. Just gotta be careful not to tear it.

Based on the above pic you think if I coat it with some RTV that it will hold a seal? I had to use a putty knife just to get the timing cover off. I hope I didn't ruin the gasket as you can see some of the rubber lining has come off.

How much do you spend for a quart of oil? How long do you expect this motor will be in service before you rebuild/replace it? Personally, I'd spend the few extra dollars and replace it if it were mine. In reality, 'The Right Stuff' will seal just about anything. Just be careful not to overdraw the front pan bolts, because the sealant will squeeze out and you'll end up with a leak somewhere else when the pan is drawn away from the gasket.

I did the same thing on my H/C swap...Clean it good and lay some Black RTV on it..I have re-used that same gasket twice with no leaks...

This probably seems very juvenile, but don't cake the RTV on there. Remember, the oil pickup is about 3 inches behind the area that you are working. If that chit gets into the oil pan, you could be F'ed, big time.

Thanks guys for all of your input. Hopefully, I will be able to get this thing put back together by this weekend. I plan on applying some RTV to these ends and hope for the best.

If you buy a timing cover gasket kit it comes with everything you need. It even has the 2 corners of the pan gasket. Just take a razor blade and cut off the ends of the pan gasket and put in the new cork corners. The kit even comes wtih a front seal and water pump gaskets. I got mine a NAPA but any aftermarket place has them. I think it was felpro caskets as well. Or you could spend near $80 for a ford oem gasket, pull the engine to clear the dual oil pump pick-ups to change the gasket. your choice.

The original ford oil pan gasket is metal and rubber bonded. It appears that even if I cut, provided I can cut through the metal, and use the cork tabs that came with my timing cover gasket set, that the cork isn't as thick.
