Another Custom Muffler, this time for all you drag racers. PICS.......

Ok, i know, i do change my exhaust a lot, about a few times each month, but i can build any muffler i want for free on my own time and im just researching and designing stuff here.

These are based off of what are called rat trap mufflers from Stainless Works, the company i work for, They are basically the same except for the turnouts on mine are slightly different.

I made these due to their high flow, they seem like they would be just a tad quieter than dynomax race bullets right off the headers and give “some” scavenging.

They are all 304 SS, 16.5” core (12” of perf) at 3” diameter, a 3.5” body about 19” long with 3.5” turnouts welded on. They will be a space saver too. and stainless wrap around the core for sound deadening. Compared to the race bullets aluminized steel body and core with fiberglass/ceramic packing.

REVISED DESIGN TO QUIET DOWN A BIT, 2.5” diameter core, a little longer and added chambers for that raspy/throaty sound:

OLD DESIGN, too loud:

Im gonna try and install them tonight and test them out, but im having fuel pressure issues, so stay tuned.

Hey..Gopher, wonder how they would work on a GT as "tail-pipes"?

--remove the regular mufflers and use those instead at the back...

Depending on the sound/performance, may be really cool...all tucked up in the stock location out of site.

Thats what they’re supposted to be used for, but i just put em on my car right after the cutouts which is about 2 feet back from the collectors, and wow they’re loud, they have a really nasty tone to them above 2,000 rpms though which is awesome I think I’ll leave em on for a little bit. On a catted system they would work great.

I wonder if i made the core out of 2.5” pipe with louvers maybe 3 inches longer too, if it would quiet down more due to more space between the core and body inside to absorb more sound, or if the 2.5” core would hurt performance. ?????

I would think that it will change it, not sure which way, would it change the pitch (tone)??? Maybe more raspy...that would be cool...

Check top post.........

I’ve revised my design, made the core at 2.5” diameter to quiet it down a little and added chambers to it. I’ll test them out tonight. Its like im having my own muffler shootout for free lol.

This new design will most likely be a very raspy/throaty sound combo..........

I will contemplate that, i’ll see if i can make another pair soon with 2.5” ID inlets. Lemme see if these are too loud though before i make more, the other ones were just short of open headers.

A guy I work with sid that 2 1/2" inlets and 2 1/2" turn-downs should take the sound level down.. ..You've got my attention on these!!!

SUCCESS............... On the revised design

They are almost like the race bullets except these are very raspy and deep, awesome tone above 2,000 rpms.

Hell i'll pay shipping as well if you wanna send me some lol.

I've seriously been looking at a set of this style mufflers, They would be installed after the O/R x pipe with dumps on them. I just really hate the way my car sounds, OFF idle that is. At idle it sounds good to me but when i drive it it just sounds like crap.

I gotta get my fuel system sorted out before any more run time, gotta flush the fuel cell. I have about 1/2 - 1 psi of fuel pressure feeding my 850 carb, not good.

Exploding Gopher,

I got my stainless works 30" chambered mufflers in the mail (accidentally got 2.5 I.D instead of O.D, but plan on making them work). Just wondering which way I should install them? Is there a noticable sound difference whether the exhaust gets "trapped" in the louvers or turned around where it flows "over" the louvers? I plan on having it being trapped to keep some noise down if that will be possible. If not, o well, we'll see how they sound.

If you turn the louvers the wrong way, facing back, it will most likely do almost nothing to deaden the sound and give it that flappy glasspack sound, keep the louvers facing forward and it will give a very deep rumble very throaty, quiet when crusing, loud when you get on it with almost no interior resonance. I have a shortened version on my 99 ram and i love the way it sounds.
