So my buddy and I have agreed to go to the track this spring and duke it out. He has a 97 Trans am LT1 with headers and catback, and a tune to support the header mod that is going to be done by himself, if he ever gets it tuned correctly. My car has the mods in the sig. His car is an auto not for sure what gears but I would guess 3.23 or 3.42's, I told him that because of that he wouldn't win. I raced a very similiar car and blew its doors off. A 95 z28 with headers, o/r y, catback, lid, and tune with auto got spanked by me by 3-4 cars before I had my tune, clutch, rims, quadrant. What do you guys think my chances are at the track, I previously ran a best of 14.18 without my tune, rims etc on terrible street tires, trap was 99.8 with a 2.3 60' time.

Not sure where you live and what track. Around here, a 14.0 wouldn't cut it vs that car with headers, catback and tune. That car should be a solid 13.50 car with decent weather, if not faster.

His car is faster than your car is. Who wins??? That is up to the drivers. He has an extra 40-60hp on you. Cut a light, slip the clutch and get a sub 2.0 60ft and you have a good chance of beating him.

Your rims are heavy.

If the guy can drive you lose, I agree with MR winters

I think you'll take him. I knew several different people with LT1s that I raced at the track and I won them with my 01 GT.

The rims are up in the air if i'll take them to the track, i want to get a set of tires to go on my stock rims but money for a college kids gets tight, as far as him driving or the car its self, i'm really not for sure how quick it is have never rode in it. My stock rims have tires for the front but I need rear tires for them. What better than a set of MT's

Like was said before. Its a drivers race. With him being auto and having the stock stall conv. it might hurt some. But it will be close. A friend of mine has a 96 z28 but its 6 speed. On street tires with like a 2.1 60' it went 13.5 at 102. Mods were Cold air and a catback and thats all. So itd be close I bet.

spend $300 on a used n20 system and get some DR's..just dont tell him you have juice and he'll wonder where he went wrong and why you beat him by 2 seconds.

Now I can actually give some information on this one--As Winters stated, down here in Houston a 14.0 wouldn't cut it. I went to the track last night in an lt1 and made some passes. The car is a 94 camaro that I have been helping do some work to. The car has HORRIBLE stock gears in the auto (2.73s possibly or something similar to that), a 3500 stall, pacesetter longtubes, o/r Y, with a knockoff muffler (will soon be changed). The car also has a k&n intake system with upgraded TB.

On 16" STREET TIRES, I cut a 1.92 60' and ran a 13.4
Anything can happen at the track so the only way to find out who will win--is to line them up. I ran a14.7-14.8 on my first pass when I blew the tires off the line; so anything can happen.

I raced my buddies near stock auto LT-1 with just exhaust.

Off the line he hooked and I spun, but once I got traction he didn't gain on me. At speed I could get the jump and stay ahead.

It will be close because as stated they respond well to mods, but if you can really drive it will be close, if not you taking the win.

IMO, it's really in how the well the driver maintains his car too. Those LT1s are really touchy because of the worthless timing system, but they do gain loads of power with simple bolt-ons. The Lt1 also makes a lot of torque much earlier in the rpm band than any n/a 4.6L and they make more hp stock v stock. If he cuts a decent 60 you're done for.

I remember reading one of those "How to Buy an LT1" articles in GM High Tech Perf like 7 or 8 years ago. Evan J Smith (or one of those other Ford/GM staffer double agents) bought a higher mileage LT1 A4 and ran 13.8 or 13.9 bone stock in good East Coast weather.

As everyone else has said, with the headers and catback, you're facing a high/mid 13 second car. In my experience, those GM A4s are pretty idiotproof as well, so about the only variable will be his launch. Without the fear of a missed shift, it will be all about the holeshot if you've got any chance of pulling him.

If you can get that 60-ft down, I think you'll look pretty good on the launch against him, though I'm not sure if that will be enough at the top of the track.

It all depends. I have seen LT1 auto's with a cold air kit and mufflers run 13.6 and stock ones run 13.8 w/ a m6.

OP- I have been around racing and modding numerous Mustangs, owned a few myself and numerous LT1's and LSx cars. There is no way in hell you beat a bolt on LT1 with exhaust,( they do not have a lid, only 98+ cars have a lid) and tune with a basically stock 00 GT by 3-4 lengths unless the other car gave up or was deathly ill.

The LT1 is the quicker set up of the two, but he could easily screw the pooch by blowing off the tires at the line. Then again, you miss one shift and its over.

If he's any sort of driver, he's gonna beat you....sorry.

I talked to the kid afterwards and he admitted to his death, he had 273 gears but yes he got beat that bad. He was suprised when I told him my mods and thought I had more done, I told him that his gears hurt him pretty bad and he agreed but I know how much he was beat by

As far as dr's are concerned I want to find a set but i really don't want to put them on my Cobra rims due to the fact that this is my daily driver. Anyone know the widest tire that can fit on an 8" rim, I had 255's on there and they bulged a quite a bit. As far as the track and conditions, both times I went it was a night around 50 degree temp. I go to Cordova which is near the Illinois-Iowa border. My 60' time were hindered by the tires I had on, they were some walmart brand tires that the previous owner put on before he sold the car to me.

Now some more info is coming out by the other kid. Those gears are dogs. Even the LSx cars had them too.

This thread will go on for pages and pages.

IMO. You need to get your 60ft time down to at LEAST a 2.000000. But a 1.8 or 1.9 would be prime. Most average drivers can't cut that 60ft time. Most guys with your mods run 13.7 with that type of 60ft time.

I agree 100% about the 60 ft times, I was disappointed in myself for the times I got, the lowest 60 I had out of 6 runs was 2.2 all the others were 2.3-2.4. But for being on the track the first time ever I was satisfied with my times. With my tune and new tires I would be dissapointed to not break in the 13's. As I said before, tires will make a difference and cut a tenth or two off those 60 ft times. If this doesn't work I plan on getting 3.73's and aluminum driveshaft this summer so I'll have to try again.

3.73's will just hurt your times if you can't hook now. The aluminum driveshaft won't help you in the ET area.
