Another wiring question

We've gotten to the point that we are installing all new wiring harness in the 65 (AdamInChains). All the new harenesss are new stock replacement items. The old harnesss, removed a year ago, was for lights, not gauges. The new harnesses we are installing are for gauges. The engine / Gauge harness on the new harness has three leads on the portion going to the solenoid. Two go to the small posts, which is consistent with the old harness, but a third wire, which is not in the old harness, appears to go to the battery post of the solenoid (based on the termininal). For those of you who have gauges, can you verify this connection?

The old harness should have had a wire going to the battery side of the solenoid too. Thats where it picks up power for the fuse box, ignition switch, light switch, ect., isn't it?

I would have thought so to, but the harness we took off didn't and the new one does. Based on the type of connector, the only thing it can go to is the battery post on the solenoid. There is an alternator feed which connects into the headlight wiring harness which appears to provide voltage to the fuse block, at least on the version we took off (for lights not gauges)

what color is the wire in question? the 65-66 get a little touchy in the wiring department, as they changed the harness at the drop of a hat, it seems. if it is a heavy, black with yellow tracer, it goes to the alternator. my diagrams show you should have 3 wires, no matter what. either 2 black/yellow, and 1 yellow, or 1 bk/yellow, 1 yellow, and 1 red (this is the battery side of the solenoid) iirc, the gauge vs. light cars differ from the voltage regulator into the harness, but the solenoid connections were the same, but im sure someone will correct me

the large third wire is a heavy black without a strip. Based on the size of the terminal, I would speculate that it does go to the battery connection. The wiring diagrams I have show a black with yellow strip. The diagrams also appear to address only guages. The harness we took off (new only about 3-4 years ago) does only have two wires.

There is no doubt in my mind that the wire in question goes to the battery side of the solenoid. 65 and early 66 cars were wired the same. Some used a red wire and some used black. (Mine happens to be red).I assume either the manufacturer of your harness made a mistake or was too cheap to use the correct color.
