Any idea why these would be inside an 8.8?

A friend of mine just bought an 8.8 with 3.73's that needed a new bearing installed in it. While taking it apart I found 4 of those metal tabs inside. Never seen this before, does anyone have any ideas?? Should I just go ahead and do the bearing, put it in the car and see how works?

Thanks!

Wow, i found also 2 of those metal things in my 8.8.
There were between the front and the rear pinion bearing.
I don´t know why they are in the axle.
Who know´s it ????????????

They break off the traction lock unit. May be time for a rebuild. I think the name for them is "Friction Tabs".
i agree, the friction disk tabs, it wont hurt anything if they break off, as long as you get them out soon enough, wont affect the trac-lok, but while youre in it you might as well rebuild it for another 45bucks.

rebuilding the tracklock is a great idea in any rear if ur swapping it in, go ahead and do it now rather then worrying about it later, pack the sucker full and nice and tight :D
