Any tips on installing head unit and speakers in 88 Mustang Conv 5.0??

I have an 88 Mustang GT Convertible with a factory cassette player and the factory 4-speaker set up(doors and dash). I was wondering if anyone had any install tips that might be useful when I go to sway them out with a Pioneer head unit and Pioneer speakers. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

well 1st get a wiring harness adaptor instead of cutting the stock harness. ALso the stocker speakers have a common gound. Not good for high power amps or head units.

www.crutchfield.com makes it so easy a caveman can do it. I just installed a JVC high def radio and JVC powered sub woofer and didn't have to cut any wires or cut the dash.

First off I hate pioneer speakers I like alpine and Infinity. I usted to work at best buy for 3.5 years installing stereos. As far as a common ground system I don't think they have that, as I remember they have speaker plugs that you can buy to directly plug into the speakers as opposed to cutting. Most cars from late 70's on didn't have common ground system. That's where one wire from the speaker is grounded to the chassis. I haven't owned an 88, but I have had an 89, 91, and a 92 and none of those have common ground systems. Buy your head unit at a place that has free installs and if it's a bigger store they will do it 100%

How serious are you? Are you going with amp(s) and sub(s) or just a couple of 6x9s powered by the deck?

When I did my last one, I bought an adapter harness, spliced new wires into it and routed them to all the speakers, leaving the factory wires completely intact. The only wires I didn't cut in the new harness were the power wires.

But if you're not going that big, you just need to connect the deck using the adapter harness and then connect the new speakers to the wires that the old speakers were using.
