My neighbor is selling his for $3k, Im thinking about picking it up for a DD. Any common problems with them I should know about? How about easy mods?

It's an '88 with 141K on it. The interior is rough in places, as is the paint. It started right up and seems to run good. AFIK, the only mechanical problem with the car is that the shocks need replaced. I know the electronic shocks are probably insanely expensive, so can they be replaced with standard shocks?
I looked up book value of the car and it's under $1k. I'll call the guy tomorrow and see what I can work out on the price.
