Iv got a 65 gt with a 302.Its got the original greendot automatic C4 in it.It has been rebuilt about 3 years ago. When I drop it in first and try to hold it in the gear until I want it to shift itll shift into second at 4500.Same thing in 2(green dot).If I just leave it in drive and stomp the pedal itll shift a 4000.Is there anything I can do to keep it from shifting untill I want it to shift other than a manual valve body?

swap to a later valve body, the 73 up one is the best way to go.

I always use a 70 and up valve body. What is significantly different about the 73 and later ones?

I wouldn't use one from a '74 Mustang II though. I put a C4 valve body from a '74 Mustang II in my '68 Mustang(don't ask why!) and the thing will skip 2nd altogether under light throttle.(skipshift!)

Under full throttle or if you shifted it manually it would stay in 1st or 2nd as long as you wanted it to however.

Put in a shift kit. Those will change your shift points. Also, I think that you can shift up to second and then put it back to first (under high load) and it will lock into second....but I am not 100% on that. It has been almost twenty years since I had a C4.

I would have to say, go with a shift kit. You can pick from a wide selection where you can retain in any gear and still have automatic properties, or you can go all out manual shifting. Shift kits are supposed to extend the life of bands and clutches. Plus it sounds really cool when you can bark the tires when shifting gears. It really eliminates the lag between shifts and you can realy feel the difference.

you are correct. The circle above the green dot is for wet weather driving, uses gears 2 and 3 only. The green dot is drive using all gears, and the L is for low, or first gear. If you put it in L then run it up and move the shift lever up to the green dot (with moderate acceleration) then you move it back down to L and it should stay in 2nd until you move it back to the green dot for third.

Yeah, well although that might be true it is silly at best....change the valve body. They are cheap and easy to replace. It only takes a few more minutes than a filter change. You can also put a nice shift kit in while you have the extra valve body on the bench. Don't buy the $$$ ones. Go to the local Automatic Transmission parts house and get the generic shift kit in a box. They are $20 or less and do exactly the same thing as the high dollar ones from B&M or other retail kit. The only difference is you have to drill a hole out in your plate with a provided drill bit while the expensive ones give you a new plate.
