Anybody have an SHO?

I'm looking at buying an SHO as a daily driver for the winter here. I've found one that has some decent suspension work done and it's the guys 4 SHO so I'm sure he knows what he is doing. Car's been repainted, new moldings, no winters, haven't seen it yet but I'm sure it's pretty immaculate. Just curious if anybody on here owns one and can tell me what to look for. Oh yeah, the guy also has an '87 Mustang GT with 37k original, sweet! Thanks.

Please, PLEASE tell me it's not one of the late-model V8 SHO cars. Those things were absolute mechanical turds ... plus they were pretty ugly and slow, on top of that. The older ones (early 90's) were kinda cool, though.

Turds you say huh? Why is that. I've hated the '96 and up models too. But, I just found a '96 that looks really stinkin clean and he only wants like $2800 for it, fully loaded of course, I guess he is moving and needs to get rid of it, it just passed emmisions last week. I drove an '89 today, the fastest production year, POS, jerry rigged like mad, I can't believe what some people do to their cars.

The origianl car that I posted this question for was this, guy said $4k or he stores it. That's more than I wanted to spend on a winter car and I'd rather buy another BMW for that money.

$4k seems kinda steep for a '93 Taurus.

Id like to know how Thunderbird wheels fit on a fwd car.

Thus, a V8 car that's slower than its own prior V6 model, and the cams tend to fall apart and cause major damage, too. You'd be better off spending that $4k on a four-banger 'Stang, some daily driver luxuries and mechanical upgrades (maybe up the oomph a little and increase the fuel mileage), and pour the rest into the 5.0.

Besides, if you need something with four doors, just buy a nice Crown Vic or Grand Marquis. Good highway gas mileage, plenty of get-up (for a full-size car), VERY safe, bulletproof motor, and easy to work on. You can score one in really nice condition for around $3k or less, especially down here where all the old folks who bought 'em new are dying off and their relatives are selling off their estates for dirt cheap.

i use to have a 93 auto. was a very nice car. had CAI, y pipe, and flows.

whoever said the auto's suck it absolutely correct. we ended fixing the trans 2 times and on the third, we just sold it.

other then that its a great sleeper as a daily driver.

Holy smokes man thank! I never heard anything about that or read it either. I was almost sick when I was reading that and then at the end it tells you the simple fix. I can take care of that in a weekend, no problem. As long as the engine is sound now is also states that it is a decent engine.

my friend has a 91 i believe, had a blow engine and had to replace it, had to totally remove the whole front subframe to change the engine. was a PITA.

the cars are nice and pretty peppy for a big fat sedan but are a PITA to maintain from what i have seen.

You have to remove the whole subframe just to change the tranny too.

Same could be said for the Probe GT - nice cars when they work, but a royal pain to service. That, and the fact that the 2.5L V6 in the GT has a tendency to just up and die without warning when the igniter in the dizzy takes a crap at random, thus leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Then again, now that I think about it, just about every FWD is a pain to service. Oh well ... not my problem.

This is crazy. I started researching the cam problem and they have filled a class action against Ford who seems to be neglecting the problem, pretty crappy. There is an ongoing list of people who have had cam failure from like 2000-now, they have about 800ppl. whos' cars have been ruined.

Parts for the earlier ones are damn expensive. I had replace the FPR once on one of the ones with the yamaha built motors when I worked at a shop in college and it was a 300 dollar part.

Now I don't know what to do. I went and drove the car today. Real nice, rides smooth, no extra engine noise, not rattles, decent exterior afew dings obviously, great leather interior. Passed emmisions 2 weeks ago. The guy has only owned it for three months and is moving and needs to sell it. WTF do I do.

My dad and I currently have an '89 with 7k miles on it, a lightly modified '91 and 2 parts SHO's sitting in the driveway and I daily drove a '91 5 speed for 3 years until I sold it and bought my Stang. So I have been in the SHO community for about 15 years now and now quite a bit about them.

I loved the car, it's an excellent daily driver, and if you get some good winter tires it's great in the winter. People put Thunderbird Cobra R wheels on SHO's and I think they look pretty good.

If it's in as good condition as it sounds with all the mods it has done to it, I would say that $4k isn't bad, I would offer him $3700 for it. With those mods, it would smoke a stock 5.0 or Z28 and would really walk away from lightly modified 5.0's or z28's on the highway. I can't tell you how many 5.0 and Z28 owners I totally pissed when I had mine, and then after they asked if it was tubo'd and I said no they about had an anurism - wasting a sports car in a family sedan is priceless!!

Sometimes they can be a pain to work on, but what fwd car isn't. And parts are starting to get expensive for them, but if you are active on the SHO forums and websites and eBay you can get some good deals.

I have changed 3 SHO motors before, and you don't have to drop the subframe to take it out or pull the tranny. If you take the drivers side wheel, suspension, and spindle off, you can pull the tranny out through that side and then pull the motor with a cherry picker. But to tell you the truth, it's about as hard either way you do it.

As long as you keep up on the maintenence and give the car some TLC, they run like a charm and are reliable as all get out.

I like the car but for saftey reasons I'd take it right to Performance Plus in Madison and have them weld the cam if they have not already been welded. That=$500 right out the door.
