'66 Mustang with 225/55WR16 P Zero M+S (not mounted yet).

for touring the 16:1 will be a bit much. But I'm thinking that the 19:1 with a quick steer kit, may be just what Goldilocks ordered.

If my calculations are correct it would be just a touch over 3.5 turns lock to lock, and that would be "do-able" with all the other rollerized stuff going into the front end.

Anybody else try this? Are my calculations correct?

Should I run for my life before PaPa Bear gets home!!!? :D

Sure wish someone would make a true PS box for our vintage iron.

TIA,

Scott

Not quite what you were after, but I have a '66 factory GT with the 22:1 manual steer box and have installed a rollerised quick steer front end (shelby drop, bump steer adjusters, roller idler arm, quick steer pitman & idler arm, koni's, 600 springs, 1" sway bar). I'm happy with the way it now handles at both high and low speed after those changes.

Any idea how many turns lock to lock you are at?

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it!

Trying to get this all figured out, without seeing or trying something, can be a bit frustrating at times.

Do you know what how many turns you have lock-to-lock?

Thanks again,

Scott

I am getting the same setup done on my manual 65 fastback. I am getting the shelby quick steer installed with the 16:1 steering box. My car is at Vintage Mustangs getting some work. Give Mike a call at 805-547-0289. We just talked about this last week. This all came about because he said it was a good time to change the box out while the engine was out. Here is some tech data on the steering boxes:
Application Tag Code Type Ratio Turns Lock to Lock
Long Shaft Boxes (HCC & HCA Prefix):
65-66 Mustang HCC AW Power 16:1 3 3/4
HCC AX Manual 16:1 3 3/4 *
HCC AT Manual 19.9:1 4 5/8
65-66 Comet and Fairlane HCA BZ Power 16:1 3 3/4
HCA CA Manual 22:1 6
65-66 Falcon HCA BY Power 16:1 3 3/4
HCA CA Manual 22:1 6

Turns lock to lock

With the standard size steering wheel at the center position, it takes 1 3/4 turns to get up against the steering stop. I have never found the turning radius to be a problem with my car.

Thanks for the positive responses

That makes me feel real good about this.

Excellent information! I'm thinking that right at 3.5 turns lock-to-lock, with everything riding on bearings this should be about as close to P.S. as we'll get w/o the vague on center feel of the stock assist.

The turning radius should be dictated by the steer stops. The effort it takes to get it from stop to stop and the precise feel is dictated by the steer ratio, stiction and lack of slop.

Sure would be nice if someone actually has all ready done it with a 19:1 box. But Hey, If I'm the first hopefully my new nick-name will be "Lucky" :D

Probably be mid October by the time I get it all done. So I'll post back and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again gentlemen!,

Scott
