Anyone carry a fire extinguisher???

After all the problems I've been having with my car breaking, I'm going to get a fire extinguisher. I haven't caught anything on fire, yet, but with today's newest breakdown I decided that it's probably a good idea. (Burned through 2 autolites :( )

Anyways, if you carry an extinguisher, what size did you get and how did you mount it?

I'd just get one of those from autozone. Like the size of a coke bottle. Mount it anywhere accessible. Some mount them on A pillars. I'd mount it on the passenger side of the "hump"
 
Mounting it in your trunk is probably the way to go. Any situation where you'll need it, you'll likely have time to go get it.

Plus in the event of an accident that involves significant force, you don't want to worry about it coming loose in the passenger compartment (the real racing ones have strong enough holders, but most of the casual autostore ones do not).

I'd imagine the risk of an engine fire is far less than your risk of getting nailed in the head with the extinguisher in a serious accident...
 
It is a good investment. My 90GT caught fire (engine compartment), I was 2 blocks from my house at a stop sign when I saw the paint rising from my hood. It's a helpless feeling watching your car in flames. Luckily a man walking down the street saw me and told me to go behind his house, and get the extinguisher. I have seen decent ones at summit, I am going to buy one and mount it on the hump as mentioned before. :flag:
 
If and when you do mount it, make sure it isn't easily kicked or molested. Dry chemical powder is VERY hard to remove.....

The best extinguisher to get is a Halon one though, but they're prohibited by the EPA because they're an ozone depletion agent. :nice:

My '73 Mach 1 went up in flames back in '86...electrical fire. I think the voltage regulator hung up. I was driving it at the time, during the day - the dash lights came on super bright, radio went crazy, then it all died. Got the car stopped in a turning lane stop light when molten plastic began dripping from underneath the dash onto the carpet and started it on fire, then flames came through the defroster vents. Cars lined up behind me waiting to turn, honking their horns, totally unaware of what was happening. I jumped out and opened the hood and the battery lead had melted the casing off and was glowing red. Meanwhile the interior was becoming fully engulfed in flames. Helpless is so true...It was a sad day. Totaled by the insurance co, the interior totally gutted, roof warped in a major way, side mirrors melted down the doors, all the glass broken by the heat or the fire dept, etc. Sickening in the end.

halon extinguishers aren't illegal. in 94 the epa stopped production of halon 1301 and 1211 but are still available due to recycling the halon. not to mention that the FAA requires Halon extinguishers on aircraft.

ALSO, if you use a drychem, keep it upright, every month rotate it a few times to keep the powder from caking, and never use one that is out of date(the base powder is (at least use to be) flammible. also, the chemical used to coat the powder and extinguish the fire is VERY corrosive.

oh yeah, i have one in my car, one in my wife's car and three in my house. all halon 1211.
 
Thanks for the knowledge guys. Especially about how some of you are packing on the roads, maybe I should think twice about messing with other 'stangs.

Oh yeah, and on top of the plugs (they were just fouled)...I blew out the intake tube from the plenum. 14 lbs of boost is a hell of a drug.
