Well my car kicked a Check Eng light yesterday.
I could tell immediately it was running funny, then when I came to the next light the car went off at will revving up and down between 1500-2500rpm.
I pulled the code asap...it was a 511, which is a bad computer.
I've never heard of anyone having this prob...doesn't seem to common. I checked my chip and it was in their like it should be.
Called ford and it's on 270$ but this seems weird for some reason.
I cleared the code and the car ran normal....but that doesn't mean it won't happen again.

Anyone have any ideas?

A bad EEC will most likely not even start the vehicle.

Well she starts...weird.
My first guess was a bad TPS since it was revving at will, but the code was the cpu.
I'm about to do a headgasket so we'll see after that. I pullied that baby up last week w/o re-tunning it.

I have had my EEC go bad on me once. It wasn't even able to read a code when ford tried to put its diagnostic machine on it. I had several things go wrong with it at the same time. The Idle Air Controll went out along with MAF. We changed the computer along with it too since it wouldnt read codes. Thats just my $.02 in my experience.

I had a 90 escort that had a bad CPU. then on the second one (replaced CPU while it was still under warr.) I just started to undo the ground and wait til the count of 10 and it worked, since the car was far out of warr. by the time I got it (it was a hand me down car, that my parents gave me since they were only offered a 500$ trade in).
