When running at wide open throttle, there's a pronounced squealing noise which sounds like your typical engine belt squeal. It seems to last for about 2 seconds then goes away. It only seems to do it when nailing it from highway speeds after the rpm's get to about 5,000 rpm's. While lookin under the hood, it's looks like the belt is deflecting & rubbing against the front engine cover between the alternator pulley & the bottom pulley on the far right side. I thought this might be where the noise is coming due to the black marks on the cover. Anyone know why the belt move deflect side-to side more than the 1/4" gap between the belt & front engine cover to the point it hits the cover ? My car is a 2001 GT w/auto trans. By the way...I last noticed the noise while easily pulling on a co-workers recently purchased 2003 5spd GT on our way home. Granted I have some basic bolt-ons & he was bone stock.....I was still surprised. Your ideas are appreciated.

My car did this very exact thing. I only saw rub marks on the driver's side timing cover. I just picked up a gatorback belt, and all was good. I took the extra initiative, and took a brillo-pad to the pulleys that had rubber marks on them, to give them some extra traction, but I don't think that was required. I'm sure any new belt will fix the problem, but my gatorback makes a very mild hum, when I can hear it over my exhaust at least, and it sounds like a baby supercharger

I guess this is a fairly common problem on our cars. My GT only has 19,000 miles on it & the belt looks brand new. I suppose looks can be deceiving. I can understand the belt slipping, but why deflect to the point it moves side to side as opposed to up & down ?

When you go WOT and then let off or upshift the belt gets some slack and squeals. This usually happens in front of others and is usually quite embarassing

Anyway, I know what you are talking about, the belt marks on the front engine cover. The bottom line is that you are going to get belt squeal but a new Gator belt will minimize that until it gets old (10-20k miles)

Here are some tips:
-get Gator belt
-keep old belt in trunk with belt change 3/8" drive bar
-mid 2001 and on a better water pump pully was used
-check idlers when chaging belt, the idlers are $14 at AutoZone and very easy to change
